What spot welder are people using these days?

Anyone else a fan of DIY MOT spot welders? Control board for dual pulse from ebay was less than $20, if I remember, and everything else was salvaged for free. By no means is this the nicest or best spot welder available, but it does the job if you get your settings figured out, and it's hard to...

Recommendations for small charge controllers with real MPPT

I'm certainly not through all of Adam Welch's vids yet, but what I'm finding most interesting is the high number of charge controllers labeled as MPPT that aren't. Which is what I expected, hence this post asking for advice. Lovely to know I had the right idea to research a bit before buying.

Excellent, thanks, I'll dig through those vids

Recommendations for small charge controllers with real MPPT

Thanks for the info! You reminded me to look for a big ol inductor of some kind on any controller I get. That controller you linked to looks great, except you say it only supports LA, and I was hoping to use all my salvage lithium batteries. Good info though!

Recommendations for small charge controllers with real MPPT

As I'm learning about solar, I'm trying to design some small systems for practice, for my shed or self-contained power pack or bike charging, ect. I also am a fan of multiple redundant systems anyway, so even when I get to the point of having one big system for the house, I'll still plan on...

    Way to go Florida!!!

I might be wrong, but doesn't a grid sized transformer service dozens or even hundreds of houses? With your idea, a big handful of houses would suffer from power outages because of one idiot backfeeding. Which... could be a good idea? Nothing like social pressure from your neighbors to get...

Keen to start using solar (just as we go into winter!)

I'm curious about what you might find when doing the logistics of a wood racking mount, as I would be interested in that as well.

Powerwall shelf building on the cheap

Excellent info thank you. I'll look up the fire spray.

Powerwall shelf building on the cheap

I've also heard elsewhere that in the case of disastrous thermal runaway, an all-metal framework will still burn at lithium fire temps; just a bit slower. I have no facts to back that up, but even if you build an all-wood storage, it'd still be a good idea to throw some insulation in there as...

Powerwall shelf building on the cheap

Everybody's powerwall build is going to be different, and everyone's budget is different, but I thought I'd bring this up. I'm planning my build in modular packs using the 4x6 18650 cell holders, on shelves for each series. Turns out reclaimed pallet boards are exactly the depth needed for the...

Small scale transmission inverter, does it exist

Excellent resource, thank you, haven't seen this one yet. That's what I get for simply skimming the internet.

Small scale transmission inverter, does it exist

Excellent, thanks for the buzzwords to continue looking. It doesn't even apply to me directly, I have a tiny lot where long wire runs won't exist. Just an intellectual curiosity. This is somewhat contrary to what I've (briefly) read online. I've read it could be as much as 10-20% loss. Am I...

Small scale transmission inverter, does it exist

If I set up a solar array I need to place the panels as close to the battery bank as possible to reduce transmission losses. I should also look at wiring in series to up voltage to also reduce transmission losses. Otherwise I have to sink a ton of money into cable cost. Industry-scale solar...

Super sketchy, totally DIY, low budget wind generation experiment

Very helpful, thank you. I'm going to keep this in mind for the future when I level up. Two clarifying comments: one, even if it does work for me, I'm going to need to use turbines that output higher base voltages than what I've currently built. I'm topping out at 12-15V currently, but I'm...

Super sketchy, totally DIY, low budget wind generation experiment

Thank you for your advice. Despite having zero experience carving wood, these turned out great on first attempt, so hopefully they will get even better.
