Found 4 of these LG cells, three of them tested over 2900mAh !
Make/Model: LG LGABC41865 (INR18650C4)
Capacity: 2850mAh
Nominal Voltage: 3.65v
Charge Voltage: 4.20v
Charge Current: 1375mA
Discharge Voltage: 2.75v
Discharge Current: 550mA (is this right? am I reading the data sheet correctly?)...
Update: 7 cells have now exploded. only 3 cells of the original 10 are still intact.
Some interesting theories posted...
I'm not game to attempt charging the remaining 3 cells.
That's awesome Chris.
I went ahead and came up with my own version of what I wanted to record in a cell spreadsheet. It's still a work in progress and more data will be captured as I move along the process. This is a sample of what I've captured so far...
Do you have any ideas on how...
A fourth one has now popped. That's 4 cells out of a 10 cell pack that have displayed this behavior.
If it has something to do with the way I break open the pack, then surely other cells would also display this behavior? Don't thing it is, as I take my time when breaking open the cells now...
When I went to update my cell spreadsheet, I realised I made an error. They actually came from a RYOBI drill pack, not BOSCH. Apologies for that bit of misleading info.
UPDATE: no other cells have popped...yet, but I am monitoring them closely. Those LG cells are rated at 1500mAh, so...
can't say for how long they've been sitting. I liberated the cells about 5 days ago now, and they've been sitting ever since.
#1. (popped) 1.04V
#2. (popped) 1.19V
#3. (popped) 0.40V
#4. 2.58V
#5. 2.83V
#6. 1.10V
The last 4 cells behave strangely when I try and measure their voltage, they start...
Already isolated and quarantined.
Pics of the second one that exploded.
AND... after removing all 10 cells that came from this pack, I discovered a 3rd cell with its ring blown off!
Any theories?
Amazing and very wierd, another one just exploded, from the same pack.
I did not charge it, nor did I discharge it. The only thing I did was free the cells from the drill pack. They are waiting to be tested. Dunno if it matters, but I have stored them vertically.
No damage done, but I'd like...
Sharing my experience of what happened yesterday, maybe someone can offer an explanation?
I'm sitting down when I hear a loud bang (like a cap gun going off) coming from the direction of my charging station. Scared the sh!& out of me. I jumped up and looked over, everything looked fine, cells...
So it's the "clamping" effect. After following the link, I came away with: It should take the same amount of current to blow a fuse irrespective of length. Except when the fuse becomes so short that clamping effect comes into play.
As an armchair physicist, this is challenging some of my...
Korishan, I'm interested to know how you arrived at your conclusion. A short fuse blows quicker than a long fuse, all other things being equal?
Up until a few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you. But after watching one of Joe's fuse test video's, I found myself having to agree that a longer...
@Ivo. That's exactly what I had in mind. Yes, it's prolly overkill, but I like it.
I'm still harvesting cells, haven't even begun to test them yet, but this is what I'm thinking: I give each cell a unique ID number, which I write on the cell once it's been freed from its pack. I also peel off...
@1958.
Wow! I didn't know such a device existed. Thanks for enlightening me.
I re-read my post. It does sound sarcastic. Apologies. my sense of humour, doesn't "type" very well.
Still looking for that spreadsheet.
may need to make my own.
Photos? Can you elaborate? What happened?
Your normal Lead Acid battery ( the ones where you can top up the electrolyte ) I wouldn't take on-board. These need to be kept upright and level. Not good on a sailboat when sailing up wind and leaning. I'd happily go with an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat)...
LOL. Is that called... erm... a typewriter or a pen? ;)
If so, I'll put it on my "List Of Things I Want To Buy"
Note: it'll be well after Charge Controller and 3d Printer...
