1973 Leyland Mini S to EV Conversion

Or when you working on a laptop for three days and drag your sleeve over the bench and mixup all the screw piles!

LOL yup, done that before too.

The other day I was working on some electronics. I had a bunch of tiny screws laying a paper towel so they didn't roll around. As I was putting things back together, I decided to use said paper towel to wipe the screen. I was screwed :p Found them all, tho. Magnets are great

Ice cube trays work a treat. Just make sure your screwdriver is magnetic, so you can pick up the screws. Then if you need to put the job away, you can simply pack the whole tray up.

edit:

The main purpose, is that I organize parts either or the order that I removed them, or in positions relative to where they come from. If its too big to fit in the tray, it is probably too big to be inadvertently knocked off the bench, or otherwise misplaced. The best part, is when you pick up a screw you don't have to check that it is the correct thread or the correct length, as there is no way for them to become mixed up.

Yeh, that would work - I usually have a bunch of magnets on the desk, but this day I was on the other desk... Rushing as usual

I just use a power driver to put the self tappers in the machined holes, and visa versa.

This week I reply to the single biggest questions asked by the community about

  1. Why don't you paint it?
"Hairy Lime" has to stay.... I painted mine battleship gray (only tin in the garage and 1 paint brush when I drove in.... separate story)

A guy goes into a seafood restaurant and asks to see the dishes of the day. The waiter wheels over a trolley and the man examines the dishes.
"I'll have the little green squid with the hairy lip, please" says the man.
"Okay." replies the waiter and calls out "Gervais!!"
A little French chef appears with a large knife, the waiter instructs the chef to kill the little green squid with the hairy lip.
Gervais is just about to slice at the poor squid when he notices a tear running down its face. Gervais is touched and says that he hasn't the heart to kill the squid.
"Not to worry" says the waiter and calls out "Hans!!" at which an enormous German bloke comes out of the kitchen.
"Sir", says the waiter, "this is Hans, the dishwasher. Hans, kill that squid!"
The dishwasher wields a huge meat clever and is just about to kill the little green squid with the hairy lip when it cringes back and gives a little cry.
"I am sorry, I just cannot kill the squid" Hans admits, his lower lip trembling.
"Well sir," says the waiter, "it just goes to show... That Hans that do dishes, can be soft as Gervais, with mild green, hairy lip squid"

For those that don't get it, fairy liquid, a dish washing liquid in the UK. Old joke.

30 second on...

Separate one, I could start my mini with a 2p coin... key was optional.
Nobody would steal it without paying them.
Had to knock a hole in the wing to get the clutch off (siezed on).
Also patched the holes up when painting with some sweet wrappers laying around whcih were painted on/over. worked as long as nobody poked a finger through.
Only crashed it once..... that was the 80's.

There's also the option of going with hub motors, which would allow, eventually, to be put on all 4 wheels.
Torque is the main reason to avoid hub motors, along with cost and maintenance/failure rate.

Tesla went multi motor gearing through a standard(ish) axle for a good reason. Tri motor has 2 motors on one axle with different designs to optimise efficiency and starting torque as the motors hand over/share output.

My Enfield 8000 restoration.
About to have 4 Tesla modules installed.
Updated charger, controller and new BMS
Sydney Australia

Quick update - subframes came off to have them powder coated & a pile of parts to be added to the shiny new metal :)

Hi Pete, followed you from YT to here, what is your budget to complete the EV mini, once complete how much will you sell it for?

He's not planning on selling it. In the end, it will be the wifes errand vehicle (if I remember correctly from a post video).

So, as far as planned expenses, what it takes to make it 100% legal and 100% safe for the wife and kids.

Very little progress on this project but got some sweet plates for it, not the ones I really want but they were cheap enough to buy to try resellagain..

What does the covid version of the Mini plan look like Pete?

Rego with the original drivetrain and EV conversion later?

My beloved 80 Civic's engine is on it's way out. I'm planning to do an EV conversion someday when it isn't repairable anymore. This is an interesting project. I'm very interested in seeing the motor and gearbox when you are able to do them. I'd like to keep my original transmission, and clutch, but I don't know how feasible that is.

I totally agree that old 18650s aren't good for this kind of project. You'd need thousands to get the Voltage and current needed, and any of them could go bad at any time. I could see such a battery being repaired more often that used. I'm thinking bigger prismatic cells are the way to go. Or pre-made ones like the Teslas you're using.

Trying to get an edit done at the moment, also went and got a second mini that's driveable for the wife - a little more on that soon. Unfortunately not enjoying youtube as much as I did. Covid happened and instead of getting a much-needed break work went up by 500% and have zero spare time or energy to do much else. Little things with the mini have happened such as had the original motor machined and crack tested finding a crack between 'cell' one and two lol

So found a new block having it bored 80tho over as std bores were rusted out to 60tho, had head port and polished with bigger valves and a bunch of other go fast bits added. The original plan was to build up a super-strong motor, get here registered, and then sell off this motor to finance the EV motor....

This plan has changed as it seems WIFE wants go fast motor lol
