Batrium Critical Fault - How to identify?

Hi

Today my batrium keeps tripping my breaker - and I am trying to work out why. This is the log I extracted. It shows 3 critical faults, but I am attempting to determine exactly what the fault is!

Does someone know how to read this log? I cant work it out.

Note: I noticed Ambient Temp is -40 (and I can assure you its not) - However I don't have any low ambient settings enabled - So regardless it shouldn't cause a critical fault. Can someone advise if this is normal on a WM5? Ive never noticed it before, but then again never really took any notice of it.

Test without charge logic - also you could try removing mons and see if it still trips, i had one with a bad cable to my long mons (gecho shit + damage)

When you say test without charge logic - Do you mean just disable everything in the screenshot?

Dunno - seems to be the case from the log - but there is no mention of this in their documentation - so not sure.

it’s been in service since Jan 26 2020 and is in a locked cupboard. Very short shunt cable (40cm maybe) - never seemed to be an issue before today. Weird.

First - when I've had trouble, Batrium support simply said... dump the log and look for the issue. Hmmmm... this never worked for me very well but it's their first advice - so..... :)

Looking thru your log (1st post) I see these 3 lines....
ShuntSoc 70.0 100.5
Critical Events 3
SoC% 2.6 1.1 5.4 6.1 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0

What's catching my eye is 'apparently' the shunt SoC is 100.5% in the 1st line, and SoC% of 0.0? in the 3rd line. I notice this because my own shunt does weird things about twice a year and when it goes to 0.0% the Batrium WM4 *does not like it* and the Shunt values stop reporting... and I have to manually reset the SoC% to get things working. Maybe this could be the issue for you as well? and the cause of Critical Events?

Bottom line, just a guess.... - monitor your shunt SoC for 100%+ and/or 0% occurrences and/or reset it manually to a reasonable value and see if the critical condition clears.

On the shunt misbehaving - there has been discussion threads on this suggesting interference as a source issue but I've not had a resolution for my own case. To give you an idea - here's a listing for the last 15 days or so of 6am voltage / SoC% from Batrium Shunt at that time/voltage. You would think 49.8v would have the same SoC % each time but it varies quite (14.6% to 21.3%) a bit for no reason I can determine BUT sometimes (twice a year) it just goes to 0.0% with no reason which causes problems.

Thanks - it is very weird. Since yesterday, it's been working fine again. Fingers crossed it's not something that keeps happening - As I really don't want my breaker breaking up to 160amps over and over.

One thing that was happening yesterday that may have caused 'noise' was a sunny day with clouds blowing over quite quickly (windy).. The system would go from say 100amps -> almost nothing and back up again quite quickly. Not sure if that had anything to do with it but thought I would mention it.

I agree about some weird things with Batrium. For me, Batrium will go weird / throw a fault *sometimes* if there's a heavy rain storm / humidity goes up rapidly. The unit is under the house with vents to the outside - so the humidity 'could'? be getting to it but its 8 ft from nearest vent.

BUT - maybe its actually clouds / major swings in amps as you suggest as this would occur along with a rain storm blowing in rapidly and make more sense that humidity.

Looks like the voltage was zero - Thou it doesn't mention shunt time out at all. The system wasn't doing much around this time either as you can see for the few min before the event the most load was 28.46amps.

What's catching my eye is 'apparently' the shunt SoC is 100.5% in the 1st line, and SoC% of 0.0? in the 3rd line. I notice this because my own shunt does weird things about twice a year and when it goes to 0.0% the Batrium WM4 *does not like it* and the Shunt values stop reporting... and I have to manually reset the SoC% to get things working. Maybe this could be the issue for you as well? and the cause of Critical Events?
I just reread this...

I had been resetting the SOC to 100% and perhaps as the charging was still going (albeit slowly) the SOC did creep up to 100.5 etc - Thou this shouldn't cause it to start reporting 0% and trigger a critical error?

It's a clue as to what might be happening thou. I have a ticket with Batrium and hopefully, they will reply soon.

The SoC on my Batrium & Victron shunts gets over 100% too & resets itself to 100% as a "recalibration" of the Coulomb tracking (seems to happen most half decent charging days).

I got no issue with that. I have an issue with a critical fault being thrown ( and hence pack being taken offline via shunt trip) and can’t identify why.

The problems are now getting worse! I woke up this morning to discover three cells at 4.1 and the rest a 4.0 - a huge difference. After measuring the voltages at the terminals on the WM5, there is no imbalance in my cells. It looks like three cells are 'stuck' reading at 4.1v.

I didn't get a screenshot this morning before a stack of charge went into the cells, but this one shows .05 of a volt difference - the three cells circled seem 'stuck' at 4.1v (they are not at this voltage - The measured voltage is 4.05 like all the other cells.

I will try a factory reset of the thing to see if it helps. At least my heart is beating again after checking the cell voltages myself.

I performed a 'reboot' using the Reboot System function in the Hardware -> System tab and after reboot, the three stuck cells are now reporting correctly.

Wow, its been a while since i've logged in and i'm now reading this thread with much interest (since i have a WM5).

Could this be related to the newer firmware that you have loaded?

Can you even downgrade?

Yeah, It's possible to downgrade the firmware - However, I have not done this.

Batrium phone support basically said to pay for support and hung up.
They later emailed me and again pushed the paid support - Which I can understand - They would get a lot of beginners trying stuff and not understanding how the system works - HOWEVER it would help if the documentation and User Interface were even moderately user friendly. The support staff also seem to use terminology that is inconsistent with the labels in the UI - Making it super hard to understand what they are trying to say.

Melanie mentioned two settings (in quotes)

1. "Charging Bypass level"
2. "charging cell volt resume"

Neither of the above two settings exist that I can find.

I could find:
'Bypass Volt'
'Cell hi resume'

Which I *THINK* Melanie is referring to, but after seeking clarification I was advised that I really should pay for an education session. The least they could do is be consistent with labelling.

They keep claiming that my time out (and ultimately the shunt tripping) is caused by shunt recalibration - But the logs I have pasted above don't really show any of that - Even the raw logs make it super hard to work out what happened. It should be bleedingly obvious, but it's not.

Anyway, I am considering paying for support to try and work it out.

The Stuck voltage reading issue isn't something they have addressed. Other users in forums and Facebook groups have had similar issues and have also failed to get any kind of reason for it. I also questioned them on the WM5 - this was a 'new' product that appears to have been discontinued quickly (according to the site it's still in beta, but it's no longer available - that in itself tells a story) - I feel I have paid for an expensive paperweight.

It's a shame about the slow releases and the terrible state of the documentation and the confusing UI. There is a real market for good quality BMS's and if they nailed it they would do really well.

Here is a screenshot from Victron's VRM - They graph the reported cell voltages as reported by Batrium. As you can see at around 2:30pm yesterday something went really wrong in the BMS and it started reporting a large change between Min/Max cell voltages. At around midday, I rebooted the BMS and the voltage measurements came good. There is no configuration setting I could have screwed up to cause phantom voltages, nor was it wiring (which remains untouched for nearly a year). Purely a software glitch solved by a reboot. Maybe it runs Windows :p

Edit: Now that I look at this, the 'Max' voltage issue could have started prior to 2:30 as the issue wasnt with the blue line, it was with the orange.

Probably a shunt timeout. I disabled shunt monitoring on mine as I had a few fault critical trips.

I only monitor cell max and min and ignore everything else.
