Battery Donations

Well, talked to a foreman today at a construction site. He told me that they have all good batteries at the moment, but he has some at home. He goes back home this weekend (somewhere south florida, more than several hours from here) he'll see what he can gather up and bring them back next week. So who knows, maybe I'll get a good dose of battery packs to work with.

Will be talking with other foremen as I come across them and see what I can scrounge up.

I'm also going to put some ads/flyers/craigslist/etc for battery recycling and see what kind of hits I get that way. I figure to probably offer $1.50/lb, or up to $5/pack (depending on the pack size). Still would be a lot cheaper than buying packs from eBay or some other place.

I've also thought about posting an ad but I'm not 100% sure.
I don't know if we would need some sort of permit for receiving lithium cells with other recyclers having contracts and whatnot

More research is needed!
From a online source I see that lithium cells are $1 per pound though those numbers are from a year ago so I don't know...
 
I've seen them going for $1.25/lb. But I'm going to offer $1.50/lb just so I can hopefully get an influx. Even at $2/lb would still be a bargain. only problem with that is someone want's to get rid of 100lbs of batteries :p I don't have that kind of currency just freely available all the time at the drop of a hat, err, 18650.

But I have posted several ads in craigslist. We'll see what kind of hits I get. I'm thinking I'll also put up a few flyers around town near the bus stops where the college kids travel. Hrmm, thinking about that one, I might get the one where the kid steals all his friends laptop batteries so he can sell 'em and buy some puff-puff :p
 
Well, I have a total of 3 sources, if they fully pan out. I stopped by a construction site yesterday and talked to the foreman and he said he had some back home.

I posted on craigslist and 2 ppl sent me an email about having packs available. The one guy said he was a e-scapper (what ever that is) parttime and that he gets packs quite often. Then he said too bad he didn't know about me wanting them before cuz he recycled about 50lbs of 'em last year. Drat! :p

I'm sure more requests will come through. I'm also thinking of stopping in to other types of shops that use powertools (cabinet makers, etc)

At least one guy I know is getting a large amount of good cells from a company that has a contract to service the medical equipment at the local hospital(s).

Alrighty, 48hrs from first post, I now have 3 leads :)

Haven't actually gotten any cells in my hands yet, but at least it's a start.

Ok, here's the scoop (already posted in the topic "Show Your Haul")

I got my first batch of batteries from craigslist. Thing to note, make sure you take your own scale to weigh the batteries if possible. The guy did tell me they were about 12 lbs. They did seem to weigh approximately 10 lbs when I held the bag. The problem is, they actually weighed about 8.5 lbs, so he got a few more $$ out of me. I'm guessing his scale was out of calibration. Oh well, live and learn.

However, not to bad for a first batch. I'm sure there are plenty to come. He repairs computers and ends up with lots of laptopbatteries due to upgrades and repairs. He usually just takes them to the recycling yard, which doesn't pay for them. So he gets a little extra cash for his troubles this way.

I have been contacted by a few people now. One person asked if this was going to be an ongoing deal. He didn't have any at the time, but gets them periodically and would like to have a place to dump them and get a return. So, I'm on his list for future recycling.

Now, the last guy to contact me, I talked with this morning and we made plans to meet Sunday afternoon. If I understood him correctly (I was loading my truck for deliveries at the time), I believe he said he has about 150 lbs of laptop batteries!! JACKPOT!!! And he regularly has loads of them. So we'll see how that turns out :shy:

I wonder if it's possible to start a battery recycling center or the like?
 
That's a really good question. Especially if it's the sole purpose of 're-purposing' the cells, not actually doing anything like a recycling center would do. Hrmmmm, gears are a turning...... *cog, cog, cog, cooggg.....*

An e-scrapper is a person that takes in e-waste, sorts the bits and resells it to a scrapyard. They take in computer towers and break them down and turn the computer parts like the motherboards and the CPUs into the scrapyard for profit. The funny thing is most of these e-scrappers are too stupid to know what they are throwing away and will often throw away stuff like core-i5 machines or 2GB sticks of DDR2. I usually go to scrapyards and I now get computer parts along with my laptop batteries. Many of these parts are worth quite a bit of money if you just have a keen eye and know where to look.

Well, I got the beast of a delivery today. 220 lbs of batteries. Most look like 6 cell packs, though. I don't have a pic to show yet as the load is still at my warehouse and I'd like to do a little sorting before hand. The OCD portion of my mind likes tidiness in pics :p

I brought home 2 boxes of the batteries today. Will bring the other 3 home tomorrow. I'll upload a pic when I have them all laid out on display.

Wow, 220 lbs on my second purchase :p And he regularly picks up laptop batteries for recycling. $1.50/lb is what he gets from the recycling center (not sure which one he goes to), but I'm closer and wanting to put them to good use. So, looks like I'm gonna have at least 2 solid sources of batteries for the future.

Now if the rest of my electronics would just show up so I can get started on testing all these cells out!
 
That's how I recently got 21 - 12v lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries for $10 each. They were brought in with some medical carts and originally cost over $750 each. They were going to just scrap them!
