Thank you very much, all this discussion had been very useful.

This current ups project is just dipping my toes in the water so to speak. The hope is that it'll grow to a full powerwall over time, and add solar. These things are always evolving. I may end up over complicating the UPS just to test out some concepts for future, but that's ok, it's all about the learning and the tinkering.

Non of my power supplies have CC/CV adjustment so I bought a few weeks ago

ZK-4KX CNC DC DC Buck Boost Converter CC CV 0.5-30V 4A Power Module Adjustable ​

It's on the slow boat from china. Reviews of this little device seem favorable, and $12 CAD isn't too much. We will see.

Thanks for the link, but that's DC-DC, so not much use for my input. As for my output, 4A won't be enough at 12V, I'll need a minimum of 7A, so I'm targeting the 10A range. Also, as I'll be coming from a higher voltage (either 24 or 48v) I don't need the boost part, and I gather Buck converters are more efficient in these applications than buck-boost modules.
