My poor old UPS is on it's last leg. Its been running my server and some network gear for many years now, but at the last power outage it ran for 40 mins and then just died when still reporting a 40min battery time left. Sure i could probably calibrate the batteries, but no one wants to mess with 5-6 years old lead acid packs.

The UPS is running with minimal load for its size, it reports the load @ 7%, or just shy of 200W.

My question is if there's a more or less simple way to convert such an UPS to Lithium? It's running a 6S Pb pack today so about 96V nominal. I guess that not even LiFePo4 will be fine with the build in charge parameters, and would require 30 cells for the right voltage. :D

Anyone know of any conversions or use cases for the UPS? Or is it just a waste of time? Should i just spend the money on a proper all in one charger/inverter/MPPT and add some solar panels for prolonged runtime and reduced power bill?

Using LiFePO4's or even Li-Ions would work, really. There are chargers available for 96V.

I would lean more towards LiFePO4's, tho, as they could handle the charge from the UPS directly a lot easier. Though, it is a lot more work to get the voltage, as you mention being 30s.

Whether it's a waste of time is really up to you. What it's worth to do such a conversion. I'm part way through converting a SU2200 APC UPS. Right now it's running on car batteries. And I got an excellent deal on some 6V tractor batteries. So the lithium conversion for it is on pause. But I'll still be building the lithium packs, if not for the UPS, but for other builds.

If the UPS itself is still very reliable, and you have the time and resources to build the replacement, go for it. If anything it's a learning experience that can be used on bigger projects.
The biggest thing is to be very careful connecting everything up, as 96+V is a lot juice.

Is there any decent BMS:es to find for a 30s LiFePO4 system? I recon that could be a hurdle for such a project.
