Yo!

Since mining crypto is kinda dead atm, has anyone here tried out BOINC+Gridcoin combination? Seems lika a no brainer to run it now, your hardware does actual scientific work, and you get paid a small amount of GRC in return.

I am running these projects at the moment,
-WCG(FightAIDS@home, Smash Childhood Cancer, fight Tuberculosis, research better materials for solar panels.)
-Rosetta@Home (Protein structure prediction that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases.
-LHC@Home (Accelerator Physics)

I am running it on 5 android phones, and my Threadripper PC + 1080TI. Any hardware is good for this, clients for all OSes.

Thoughts?

The title caught my attention. IMPO, any search for cure/aliens thing is a scam that processes something else entirely.

Cancer is easy to treat if you know how the medical scam evolved on the last dozens of years. As for things like E.T. ... well it's probably not a debate for this type of forum, as neither is the cancer one.

What

There are countless medical journals/publishings easily available online, with results made possible by distributed computing. There is no denying this.

I have a friend that currently specializes in cancer research, and he praises the distributed computing immensively, especially for universities without access to supercomputers to run the simulations.

But if you still believe it is a "scam", then there are several other projects that are whitelisted. Searching for prime numbers, mathematical research etc. Source code is open too!

The data to be processed, and the programs that process it are stored on your computer. It would be a fairly bold move to try abuse distributed computing. Eventually someone would figure it out.

I like the idea - still have two rx580's sitting here with heaps of extra power - looking into it

@Geek well, we did. Since SETI.

"with results made possible by distributed computing" - how many have proven usable for something in practice ?

Here is a list of all published results, scientific journals:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Publications_by_BOINC_projects
However, it is not current. Publishing scientific results is a process that takes years. You can likely find newer results on each projects subpage.

So, what hardware do you guys have access to? :D

Being a geek, I ofcourse opted for the Threadripper platform. It seems to tick all the boxes you want in a high-end desktop. More PCIE lanes than you'd possibly use, QUAD channel memory and a crazy CPU upgrade path all up to 32core64threads!

Full spec of build
-Asrock Taichi X399
-Threadripper 1900X 8c/16t@4.15Ghz all cores
-Nvidia GTX 1080 TI with a slight undervolt
-32GB DDR4, 2133CL15 @ 2800CL16
-Seasonic 660W 80+Titanium PSU, running over 90% effectiveness at full system load
-Noctua fans and CPU cooler (NH-U14S) + 2x140mm,1x120mm

I have also been tweaking the crap out of the memory setup. Reduced latency from 108ns -> 70ns, memory bandwidth is crazy on this platform!

Nice setup Dala. Well, was until I got to the "Nvidia" line. :p I'm team red in the video arena ;)

My next major computer upgrade I'd like to go Threadripper route. It's got so much potential. That ASRock board looks sweet, too

I have been oogling the Radeon VII, the FP64 performance it has puts the Nvidia lineup to shame!

Imagine working on the project researching solar panel materials, with a rig powered by solar panels! :D

As of today, my computer has generated 17375 GRC

I used to do Folding@Home for fun, but it eats electricity and didn't make sense to continue with no returns. I wasn't aware there were some that give cryptocurrency. I'll have to look into it again.

if you use banano ( they have a cool discord server) and fold@home for them you earn crypto for folding also!
