Headphone Recommendations

I'm looking to buy a good pair of over-ear headphones and was just wondering if there's anyone out there who might be able to recommend some? Price isn't really an issue. I'm looking for high quality, good frequency response, low notes, etc. I know Bose has a decent reputation, but having owned 2 pairs of Bose earbuds, I was very dissatisfied by the material quality and how they broke down after 2 years of use.

You might want to take a look at the beyerdynamic DT Edition (or DT Pro) series, the 770 (closed), 880 (semi-open) and 990 (open): https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/
Edition is for home use and Pro for studio work, but while acoustically very similar the Pro series is built slightly different. Specifically, while both can be adjusted, the Pro have a slightly bigger adjustable range so they can be a bit larger. That made them more suitable for me so I'm using the DT 990 Pro and I'm happy with them. I've tested some of these against each other and found the open design is what I like best but that's down to everyones personal taste. If you don't know yet what your preference is I suggest to test it as well, this is obviously a general thing and not related to any manufacturer or model.
 
Are you wanting open or closed back headphones? Honestly under $500 I'd buy the Massdrop HD6XX, these can be had for $215USD and are slightly modified version of the Sennheiser HD650 exact same sound profile just different finish and cable option. After that something like the Beyer DT1990m twice the price but man they are good.

Closed back cheap option is the ATH-M40x, then you step up to say Massdrop x Fostex TR-X00 which are really nice middle of the road $400USD cans. Then the mack daddy Audeze EL-8 at about $600USD.

All of these are really good Cans, some are hard driving so you will want a good headphone amp and to get the most out of them a nice DAC. Like a JDS Element, or Schiit Stack.

Idiomatically is referring to the next step up. He is saying the ATH-M40x is the cheap option. Which it is at about ~$130 AUD or I guess less than $100 USD
 
Yeah, was talking to a few guys over in the chat about this. Altho, I still think headphones over $50 is a just a waste of money. Most people can't truly hear the difference anyways, or the differences are so subtle, it easily overlooked.
Now, for people who need the proper equipment for work related, like audio sampling, remixing, sound effects, etc, that makes more sense. But for just listening to music, watching movies, or the like, $50USD is just fine and dandy, IMHO ;)

I wouldn't say that myself. Expensive headphones do sound great. But you also need a quality amp to drive them.
 
I'm a big fan of the Sony WH-1000XM2. Have had mine for about a year. Great bluetooth audio quality without any ridiculous colouration. Good battery life and noise cancelling that will block most of the world. Saved my sanity on more than a few long plane trips. 17hrs straight for one leg. Didn't need to recharge. $449
 
Certainly if the audio source is crap the best cans in the world will make little difference, but paired with a quality dac/amp combo and source great cans are just that great. Cheap cans wear me out, but units like the HD6xx I can use all day. The difference is immediate to me and very pleasant.

Geek, Kyogle is a great part of the world. I go camping / 4wding at a property down that way near Mt Warning.
