I discovered the use of 18650 cells a few weeks ago while searching about solar panels setup for my house in south of France.
First I was planning to install a simple grid tied system to sell all the production to our national agency. But due to regulations change (as of Oct 2017) this can not be possible anymore with a DIY setup.

The only way to use a PV setup in a DIY way is to feed the house through a "smart inverter" which pick-up the power from where it is cheaper : 1/ PV, 2/ Batteries 3/ grid.
Looking at batteries I found out that this is a really expensive item on the market going from 0,3/Wh(LeadAcid) up to 2+/Wh (LTO). The Li-Ion seems a good alternative but may be a bit expensive.

I found then the videos from Jehugarcia, then some other and at the end the ones from hbpowerwall.

Glad to enter the DIY world of powerwalls.

To present a bit more my project :

I am using more or less 4000 kWh per year here in south of France. I am in a place named Green Valley near between Die and Valence. The sun is quite good here. From simulations, I can get more or less 3500 kWh per year with a 3 kWp setup.

At first I was thinking about a system to send to the grid the overproduction. But since the regulation moved this year in France at EU request, It is not possible anymore for DIY setups. Having it done by a professionnal prevent any ROI on the setup life time.

To avoid injecting current to the grid, I was thinking about batteries to store energy and increase the autoproduction rate. It will not be possible (I think) to be 100% off-grid without modifying a lot the way we use energy at this time. Maybe later on...

To reach 70% of autoproduction in average through the year, I calculated the needed battery pack at 30 kWh (used at 70%). The inverter I am thinking about is Imeon 9.12 (French company in Brittany). It includes 2 MPPT, a battery charger and an on/off/tied grid mode. They support Lithium chemistery but anly from "known" battery providers.

From my searches here, I am making up my plans to make a DIY battery. That wy I opened a "beginner thread" in the battery section
