How to precharge 1s80p pack

Hi everyone,

i still wonder what you use to test/charge your packs.

I am looking forward to charge the single 80p packs , but i am unsure which charger/discharger to use.

The pack consists of already fully charged cells, still self-balancing.

I thought i could probably go with 40Amps?Or is it too much?The common iMax, etc. have around 2Amps, so that would take quite long.

As mike said, the iMax should output 5A at 1S.

Other options made by Junsi:
10A with 250W iCharger 106B+ / Turnigy Reaktor (Hobbyking) / Charsoon Antimatter(Banggood)
20A with 300W iCharger 206B / Reaktor / Antimatter
30A with 1000W iCharger 306B / Reaktor / Antimatter
With a decent power supply ofcourse

The Junsi chargers also have much more flexible firmware with adjustable end-voltages for both charging (up to 4.3v for HV cells) and discharging (down to 2.5v)
Discharging can also be done CC/CV like charging.... that is... Constant current (eg, 1000mA) down to the cutoff voltage(say, 2.8v) and then it will switch to Constant Voltage down to an (adjustable) end current (eg, 100mA)
 
I use my iCharger DUO. it can do alot. DUO 4010 can do 70A single channel.

I am about to check out the chargers both iMax and the iCharger. Sure the price might be an issue as i currently do not really have any other applications
to use it for.

Does the iMax has any settings to prevent overcharging/max voltage threshold regulation?

Look at the Reaktor or Antimatter, they are identical to the iCharger but less than half the price.

The iMax is not a charger I'm super familiar with, I read the user manual and decided it was not for me(went with iCharger 106B+) that was ~10 years ago.
Not a lot has changed since then, except for a pile of poor quality iMax clones. There is however an open-source firmware (Cheali Charger) that apparently adds features to the iMax, including a calibration option to fix it's poor voltage measuring accuracy, but I didn't really look into it much: https://github.com/stawel/cheali-charger

The only real gripe I have with the iCharger / Reaktor / Antimatter chargers, which might not matter to you, is they don't quite get to the full LiHV voltage (4.35v) only 4.30v
Junsi claim it's a hardware limitation in the decade old design.
 
Thanks a lot! I just stumbled over a huge range of iMax clones. Ranging from 20 to 80 bugs.

I wonder if anyone tried to connect some Opus 3100 Chargers in parallel ;-) i would end up at 6 Amps.
But actually i am not sure if that would be a bad idea :)

Connecting Opus in paralell is not an option i would say. If you dont have a rush then just hook up a lab-supply or any other :)

Yep, a lot of lab power supplies have a max voltage and max current setting. That'd be fine for charging a lipo pack since it will follow a similar charge curve to a regular lipo charger.

If you set max voltage to something like 4.1 or 4.2v, and max current to whatever your pack and bench supply can handle, it'll taper the current off near the end. The main difference to an actual lipo charger is that it won't completely cut off at the end (you can just switch it off manually after a decent amount of time. It'll only be pushing a tiny amount of current near the end of the charge and will keep it under the voltage you set).

If you had more use long term for a lab power supply than a big hobby charger, buying a lab supply might be a better choice.


There's an Australian ebayer selling 60A 30v constant current lab supplies (240v input) They probably come out of China and could probably be found on AliExpress etc.... or something similar. Don't know what the quality is like.

I guess that would be a good choice. Theres is more to do with a Lab Power Supply. And the price is still reasonable (even if they have less power, usually - around 5-10 Apms, but won't get more with the charger, too).

I also have a Graupner Switch-Mode Power Supply, but it starts at 5V, so won't go with that.

And by the way - i was already looking forward to get a lab power supply ;-)


Thinking about the Amps - You'll only get beyond 7 Amps above 150-200 or more.

While searching for a charger i came across this:

Looks very similar to the iMax. Not too many features, but you can set the Amps for charging up to 7 Amp.

And you can also have the discharge program.

Its only around 40. So i guess that could be a choice.
