Ugh, every so often when I peel the old nickel off the bottom of a used cell the bottom tears open with the weld and I get puff or hiss and then the stink of battery internals.

Obviously I recycle these? Tips on preventing this?
Thanks all!

Better technique.

Is it ebike packs? Snipper tool and snip/roll it off tends to prevent it

Use flush cutters and don't roll if it still does it.
Don't use pliers as they pull the tabs too far away first.

And yes, any cells with holes in them, go into the recycle bin

No I think they were powertool cells, which were shit capacity anyway. Noob mistake but they were free. I have just started on my laptop cells (also free). I have some very small needle nose pliers that I'll those.
Thanks all!

I think my pliers are too big. Some cells are definitely more robust than others. Thanks!

Not popular, but maybe leave those nickel strips attached and just trim it to be less than the circumference of the cell bottom? It's easy to solder and spot weld to an existing nickel strip, and the extra weight is negligible, really. Anyone who has tried spot welding to an uneven cell bottom will tell you that it is difficult, to say the least. I was leaving the nickel strip on my genuine cells because it was pure nickel, but I have to remove it on my generics as they use nickel plated steel. On genuine power tool packs some of the nickel strips are actually nickel-plated copper.
