Have been lurking for a few months, finally going to start building. Not sure what is the thing….

I’m spending $0 on cells, just grabbing packs from the recycling. I have a few hundred cells, either from radios or power tools. I will buy BMS, and am used to them from LiFePo4. Have several 12V inverters, golf cart, and about 400watts of solar. What would you build?

Might want to stick with LiFePo4 unless you get a 24volt inverter because 12 volt and Lio are annoying. With so few cells and as warm up I would build some small packs to start. I enjoy making little phone/computer backup batteries and they are way cheaper than the ones you can buy. I even found a pcb board on aliexpress that can do bidirectional usb C charging and am planning on using that for a portable phone charger pack to throw in my bag for emergencies. Another fun project to start and can use whatever cells is to 18650ize everything electronic you have laying around and build in those nice single cell usb charger boards so you will never have to use a AA again :)

Thanks, great ideas. I was wondering if I should be trying to use power tool cells for high draw projects like scooters, bikes, small capacity inverters or golf carts. Are they more rare then low c-rate cells?

Batteryclearing house.com often has tool battery packs.
just search the site for tool there are more there.
If i was starting a 18650 powerwall I would look at these :
https://www.batteryclearinghouse.co...3kwh-battery-pack-13x-3-7v-90ah-modular-packs
They are based in NC the next state over from you.
Later floyd

there is also generally a trade-off of ether capacity of high C rating. As an example common laptop cells are low C with 2200mah but you can get much higher cap cells at that low 1-2C rate. High C like 10-20(15+amps) tend to be under 2ah capacity.
