I've been following HB Powerwall and jehugarcia on YT for a while now and decided to build my own 18650 power storage. Right now I have around 170 cells (more to come soon) and a Batrium WatchMonPlus. I'm still looking for a solar charger and inverter. It will only need to be small as it will only run a computer and maybe the internet. The problem is I can't seem to find any good equipment available in Australia for it. can someone direct me to what I should look at?

First of all you need a couple of thousand cells. I highly recommend you collect that first before you start to buy anything. Then you look into what exactly you intend to do.

We see people every day that buy stuff first and then figure out what they want to do :)

I normal PIP 5048 is a good generic solar charger and inverter all in one unit.

I'm just looking to get a 1000w inverter that I can run 24/7.
Load will be 500w or less. Would like to add PV to it at some point but I'll probably start with mains connected if possible.

500w/hour * 24hrs = 12kwh/day. Let's say you have solar 1/2 the day (enough to power the inverter AND charge the battery)... that still leaves 'on the order of'6kwh the rest of the day. A battery packthat can deliver 6kwh/day (with 50-60% DOD)would be 'on the order of' 14s100p (or 7s200p)- e.g. 1,400 cells.

12kwh per Day results in atleast 15kwh energy from.battery. then add upp losses going from ac you need another couple of kwh

So all in all.... Doing
Ac -> battery > ac has alot of losses.
So what is your goal? Massive online Ups? Because baovr scenario cost you atleast 16-17kwh per Day to Power 12kwh load including the Gear.

As i often say and it may sound negative but many People start in the wrong way. IF your plan is to save some bucks you start with solar with grid tie or solar with battery. Powering thing from battery charged from ac.... Nah not worth it in many places :)

My current plan is to get it up and running through mains and switch to solar or add more panels after it is up and running. I have a low income at the moment, so I can I only get $300-400 worth each fortnight. Right now I just want to get the charger and have an idea of what inverter I can use once I have the money. Once I have those I can add 640 or so cells per fortnight.
So would that mppt charger work for a 14s battery configuration?

It would but i Still recomend buy a proper one that do solar like the pip. Because i still think you start in wrong end. IF you dont have more money to spend you Will in the beginning end Up wasting money in terms of electricity due to starting in wrong end.

Solar should be the first end and not to run it via ac....

Sorry I'm a bit confused now. Are you saying that the unit I linked cannot do solar?

That One do it. But i intepretaded that you are going to run your load via ac as Charger as start? .IF your plan is solar as start then om happy again ;)

So now I have a plan for pv, mppt charger and storage. What is a good affordable (sub $500) inverter for 48v (14s) system?

Look at pip5048 and get an all in One unit. Then you get ats and many other features too
