New off grid 48v build

That's interesting you choose a PWM charger. That's why it has a max of 90V as PWM is unable to buck the voltage down like an MPPT controller would. So it needs to be matched as best as possible. Have you considered getting a separate MPPT charge controller like the PCM60x? You'll need one anyways since you're planning to have 14 panels.
 
Hmm Ive had a quick look at the pcm60x charge controller, I will have to get one eventually but in the mean time,will the inverter I have be ok to charge14 battery pack (58v) to start with?

I have a quick question about the BATRIUM system,
Ill have x2 banks of 14 packs,

How many longmons will I need?
And where can I get the system cheapest? :D

The PIP-5048 and the PCM 60 can charge a 14s bank, they are not perfect for lithium, but it's possible (disable float charging and check settings).
You need 28 longmons for 2 strings of 14s.
The Batrium system will be cheapest at Batrium... ;)

Its good to hear it will charge the 14 packs, I have looked on the batrium website for prices as I cant find them for sale anywhere else :huh:

if the charger is indeed PWM, and you have 3 panels, then assuming your max voc of one of your panels shouldn't be more than 40v, then the best you can do is run 2 panels in series. You can't run 3 panels in parallel because you have a 48v system as you need your panels to be closer to 60v to be able to charge the batteries. So minimum is 2 panels wired in series. Or 4 panels with 2 in series. But not 3 panels. Maybe someone else can confirm my logic here...
 
Yes at the min I have the 3 panels wired 3 into 1
So what your saying is to wire them up either 2 together to make 60v or get another panel to make 2 lots of 2 panels both making 60v, as wired theway they are at the moment,there wont be enough volts to go through the inverter and charge the batteries?

BATRIUM is ordered, Ive opted to wait for the newer version coming out in a week or so, along with a shunt,
Looking forward to it arriving, I should have the first bank of 14 ready by the time it gets delivered,
Has anyone else gone for the newer version?

Hi all,
Im just checking in with the slow process, first bank of 14 batteries are done, Im just doing the last 3 packs for the second bank,
my watchmon4 came the other day but as of yet I cant use it, batrium need to update the firmware for the watchmon4 before I can get it up and running,
Ill update with pics soon,
Has anyone else had a watchmon4 delivered?

lol love the mining rig setup :p

However, if that window is from outside, I would recommend putting some filter of some sort over it so that the cards don't get gummed up. Probably just a scrap piece of sheet pulled across the frame.

Nice how it all just "vanishes" when the covers are put on :)

A big thanks to WIM for an earlier post on here saying (disable float charging and check settings) this bit of advise has sorted the charging problem I had, if there is any difference between float charge voltage and bulk charge voltage the inverter will only charge for 10 minutes,

Awesome thread dude, my only concern would be heat. I've thought about putting mine in the conservatory but the heat this summer has been insane and think I'd be to scared to have it in here with everything closed when I go out. Hows yours doing for temperatures?

Also as this is off grid you said is it powering purely mining equipment? Hopefully those PCI risers arent powered off of a SATA connection that is a huge fire hazard and they aren't rated for the Amps that pass through them, cant really tell on the picture

If you need cooler air for inverter, run some flex exhaust vent conduit from the unit to fresh/cooler air. The fans should pull plenty through those. Something like this Dryer Vent Kit. There's another one that's made of white rubber like material that's used for exhaust for bathrooms but I can't seem to find that one. It's cheaper.

As for the SATA power connectors, the ones causing fires are specific. It's the ones that have the wires terminate in the plug itself, if I remember correctly. And then it's the ones that are at right angles, again if I remember correctly. There's a guy on youtube that did an xray of a fail and non-failed plug and showed what happens. It's not the current that it can't handle. It's usually that the wires inside are so close together they cause a short, but it's low enough the PSU won't shut off.

Thats a good idea with the vent pipe, I know the white pipe you mean too, Ill see how it all performs once its connected to the grid (this week hopefully)
If it runs hot Ill move it all to an outside metal shed thats in the shade,
As for the mining rig, it was running 24 hours a day for a few months with no trouble but thanks for the info, Ill look at it next time I turn it back on.

The PIP5048HS has a MPP VOC of 90V, so you would be better of putting two panels per string, and then 2 parallel strings.
