I don't want to buy a bms, because I developed one myself on the basis of a Raspberry. It's quite simple, it's checking the pack voltages and the temperatures of each individual pack. If something is wrong with the temperatures or voltages, it will disconnects the whole battery from the rest of the system.
I can also watch the data live on my smartphone and webbrowser. The cost was about 100, mainlyfor the raspi and the power relay.

There is no balancing at all. The balancer makes this awfull sound in its normal state.
