Here's some pictures I took of the neighbors blueberry field. Ice being a wonderful insulator (from cold), he sprays the plants with water when temps are going to drop below 34F (1.1C). The ice keeps from the plants from actually freezing as water doesn't actually freeze at 32F, but just below it, around 31.9F. The ice/plant contact is at 32F, and no lower. This is kinda like how you can heat water up to 212F (100C) and no higher under normal pressures.
These two images, you can see that the blueberries are already budding. This is a little early for them, though. It should be mid- to late-Feb.
But climate change and all is causing things to bloom earlier.
