VAWT designs

I'm thinking of designing/building a VAWT setup.

I was wondering what input I could get on this as far as magnet sizes, wire sizes, coil sizes/shapes, etc. I've read several other articles, but could always use the extra input.

(on other forums) One user said to use round coils, another said trapazoid, and another a square (as close as possible) when using rectangular magnets. I'm thinking of using the rectangular ones as they seem to make the best flux field for this type of design; unless I'm missing something here. Would a circular magnet work just as well, better, worse?

What designs seem to be better suited over others? I've watched several videos of muddymuddymuddmann on youtube. It's been awhile, so I probably should re-watch them for refreshing purposes. He's used a few different designs. I do like the idea of re-using old brake rotors for mounting the magnets on. Clever idea imho.

Thanks for the input :)

VAWT ...Vertical Axis Wind Turbine ... these , like most modern wind turbines use a brushless motor ... neodymium magnets on the rotor , coils of wire on the stator , no physical contact , brushless , tight engineering to get the air gap between the two at a minimum for max efficiency.. output is usually three wires ... sinusoidal (same as 3 phase grid) ...

An easy short cut is to use brushless motors used by remote control airplanes/helicopter flyers very powerful compact and cheap!

This one has a power of over 2KW!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Castle-Cr...482459?hash=item3cf242811b:g:q3wAAOSwfVpYnd9c .... this motor run at one tenth design speed could still generate 200W

The big downside is these are designed for high rotational speeds , so could only work for very small turbines

Ebike brushless direct drive hub motor. Low rotational speed, neodymium magnets, tight air gaps, reasonably optimized magnetic field path, three phase windings already in place, built in multi speed chain drive. Cheap as chips if you look around on Ebay since you don't even want a wheel.

Elmo, I don't even know how to search for something like that. I don't get much or what I want when searching for "ebike direct drive" or even "direct drive motor". I know there are other key words, but dont know what they are.

However, I think getting the magnets and making the coils is more desirable. After all, we are about "doing it yourself" here ;) I'd like to make one from semi-scratch if possible. It's the learning factor and the nostalgia of having made something with my own hands.

The key word is really "brushless", add in "direct drive hub motor".

You'll like this gent's approach.

Here's what a brushless direct drive hub motor looks like inside.

Look up other power.com Using that website I built a copy of their 17' wind turbine several years ago. Unless things have changed you should be able to get all the information you need from there.

Thanks, I'll look into it. :)
