You can download your PMs. Its easy to empty your inbox too.

I believe the reasoning behind limiting the number of PMs a user can store helps to reduce server load by keeping the database small.

Never understood inbox limits. It should be at least a couple GBs nowadays...

The 250 made sense 20 years ago. They just haven't increased it between versions. If you think of forums with 100,000 members, a few GBs per person is just not possible. For a forum our size, it doesn't matter - at least not right now ;)
