In Florida, USA, it is Illegal to be disconnected from the grid....
#11
@alt.energy.nerd: This is true. I agree. But, for those who actually "know" how everything is installed knew they could just flip the mains breaker. I'm guessing (and severely so) that there are plenty of customers who say "I want solar powering my house!", pay to have it installed, and have absolutely no idea how it fully works. These are the people FPL wrote that section about, I'm sure. They are the dangerous customers who don't know any better for what ever reason.
Personally, I would of just say "Phhtt, what ever" go out and flip the mains breaker, or if need be, disconnect the power from their box and wired it into the secondary panel. There are plenty of people I'm sure who did just that. Then when the power came back on, they rewired it or turned on their gridtie system.

It's the ignorant people we have to watch out for. And it's those people that stupid laws, regulations, statutes are made for.

@Korishan

I agree... It's the same kind of dumb argument in Tennessee about municipal fiber, it's just a market paid for by the ISPs in the state to keep fiber optic internet from being widespread. TVA(the local provider) is also just as bad for solar power. They can't pay anything for our power we sell back, but we can surely take it for free once your bill runs back to nothing. In the mean time, they use the credits the federal government gives them to build more solar farms therefor leaving you, the consumer, without a choice.

I honestly like the idea of the second disconnect myself, sure you can flip the main breaker but to me being a newbie for this arena I figured I would apply a small amount of common sense if I was going to be making a statement. Sure, a secondary disconnect is completely legal, but when I got to thinking about it.. there's nothing that says you can't make that rasp pi controlled so that you can flip to grid to charge when the rates are lower xD

I'm in NW Florida and currently working with GoSolar Program trying to get a system installed. I'm getting very hard push back trying to get a system with a battery. I found this video on the SolarEdge website that describes the exact configuration I want. https://youtu.be/L6wglt9oCEA

GoSolar is telling me this isn't legal in Florida???

I'd sure appreciate any feedback.

Tim, I'm not really sure. I haven't done any of this through a commercial installer. I would recommend going to several different solar installers and ask them if it's possible. If they say it's not legal in Fl, then ask for the Statute that states this. Don't just go on their word.
I do know that installing Battery systems takes a different certification on the installers part. If they aren't certified to do it, they may say "Oh, it's not legal" instead of actually saying "Oh, we're not certified to do that". They are trying to get your business, so they may employ the shady car dealer mentality at times, unfortunately.

We need to start a petition and write to our legislators to allow individuals to be 100% off the grid if they want. We need to start boarding to correct people into office.

Also in here in the Netherlands, same story but not really the same.
You can ask them to close you down and to take you offgrid.(meter only).
Will cost you around 120 to 800 euro depending on your situation.
But you must provide evidence that it is still worth to life in that house.
Also there must be a good reason, if you have solar incl storage, you must pay tax, dubble what you would pay normal.
BUT your system must be approved....good luck with 18650 cells.
There are some tricks.

If you state that you go on a world trip, they will check if you are at home or not.
The max time for your disconnection is 12 months, after this you must be reconnected.

Or you let them take away your meter and connection(incl cable's and such) and you will pay 600 to 1500 depending on your situation, but tax must be payed: sun collector tax.

This also applies for storage and returning into the grid
The same for a woodstove, was declared illegal several years ago, but if you install a filter it was good, and of course TAX.
Some people around here we're honest and ordered a filter, few years after the took the whole fireplace out.

The same with a vegetable garden ect

Anyway this is a world wide site, if there are any dutchies that are interested to go off grid or self support living in the great Netherlands......feel free to send me a pm

Is there a reason that i say roberment or in dutch "roverheid?"

+1 for bill, but also +1 for Korishan.
Laws are to protect ignorant people from them self.
One person can collect and shoot 100 guns and he won't even harm a fly.
On the other side there are persons i don't even thrust with a screwdriver(i don't mean vodka).

In the middle: if some robberments just could ALLOW there taxpayer to prove that they are serious and know what they are doing.....oke.

US Government overreach - everywhere these days. For example, in many cities you are *required* to pay for garbage pickup (e.g. at least $30/month) even when you're home is empty / unoccupied such as when you have it on the market for sale.

In Oregon, they haven't gotten so far on Solar yet but they may get there - which is why I designed my system to be off-grid with automatic transfer switches... and avoid producing more than the house can use so there is always some consumption. This way, the power company has no idea that I have solar except my bill goes lower each time I add capacity Smile

Yep, I kinda plan on this, too. Just take more and more circuits off the main and move them to the alt energy box. Then have a transfer switch if something goes awry and need the grid for backup.

It won't be long before we are taxed for the air we breath. I'm surprised smokers haven't been taxed for smoking (other than buying them) for polluting the air. (btw, i'm not a smoker and never will be, nasty habit Wink )

@ Ibiza, you meant "polite state" i guess.
I almost got a ticket for polluting surface water.
Here is the deal.
I have a canal on the border of my land, dead at one side.
I put a pump in it for my irrigation system. Water was pumped on my crops and was going back thru the ground.
Simple, right? rain water follows the same path, ticket was 5000 euro, i got off with a warning.
Now that pump is hidden and pumps at 2 am.
I dump my waste water of the filter(from my pond) into the canal, i had to prove that my water was in better condition(healthier) than the water in the canal, i won...
Now the roberment(also the lower ones) is/are keeping a eye on me, somehow i still manage to obey the law and be self supporting.(somehow....yah right, read learn &obey: overcome improvise and adapt Angel )
Biodiesel is out of the question, but i drove some happy miles, so now i go electric....
my tobacco, wine, veggies are very good.
But this is way off topic, sorry
