RV 18650+solar+alternator+mains

Hi guys (and ladies :heart:)

I'm looking to build a wall for my soon to beconverted van (kind of RV) to support a fridge (12, water pump and my electronics like smartphone, laptopand projector.

Most RV enthusiasts will have AGM batteries/lead acid combo but i would like to try my luck having a powerwall as any "normal" house would have.

The battery bank willhave 3 sources for charging being from the most desirable to the least: solar, van alternator and mains when available.

Current parts wish list:

- Solar panel:GWL/Power Solar panel GWL/Sunny Mono 300Wp 32V
- Pure sine inverter: there's a choice between12/24/48V/120V and 1000w 1500w 2000w 2500w 3000w to run my electronics
-CTEK D250S Dual: it's dual purpose, it's a MPPT controller and is also a automaticcommuter from alternatorcharging to solar charging
-CTEK SMARTPASS: will allow charging up to400Ah
- Mains charger for when i have access to 220v AC: did not find the best option yet to charge 18650 battery bank

Project goals/considerations:

- power the fridge 24/7
- easy to build as my knowledge is limited
- all i have a soldering station
- do it low cost - getting used laptop batteries to get cells from (already have some at disposal)
- safe to use: i will put the battery bank in a safe vented enclosure but it will still be inside the van where i will be sleeping
- up-gradable: i would like to be able to size it further by adding banks whenever i get enough cells to build more. therefore, i would like to build it in a way that the system is already ready to accept more capacity

What are you toughts on this? should i go for it or should i just stick to the mainstream acid batteries for this purpose?

First off, welcome to the forum.
Secondly, Lithiums have a different curve than leadacids. So the charger (CTEK D250S) is probably designed to charge lead acid, not Lithium. Unless it has a way to switch over, you will still need a different charger for the Lithium banks

Upgradeability is fairly easy. Either make each pack system voltage and parallel them (like you would lead acids), or have a string of packs to reach system voltage and add whole strings to the system at once. Both methods work, both have pros/cons. This biggest con of the pack @ system voltage would be that you'd need a bms for each pack. Unless you make them so you can just parallel each series in the pack with the next pack (having wire connections, for example a 7s, 8 wires going from one pack to the next; gotta include ground of course). The biggest con with the serial packs is that you need to have a full string available to put into service. So, with a 7s setup, you'd need 7 packs each time you want to expand.
7s, btw, is 24V
 
With Lithium in an living space I's put it in a metal box preferably fire proof. Other than that there are lots of options for equipment. Just watch your Min and Max voltage for those devices as they need to all in the 21-29V (we generally ease up on the min and ax to extend life of the cells)

the rest is up to you and what you want. Solar is getting better and more efficient all the time so look at the different panels as we as the space you have to mount them. Generator to charge when you have no solar/mains.

I don;t know if there is a charger that will run off the alternator but that would be another great options for while you are driving.

Yes, I agree. Make sure the packs are in a metal can of some sort. Perhaps an ammo box if you can find some. It doesn't have to be air tight. It just needs to be able to vent safely if they get too hot. Also in case some of them decide to go flying if they malfunction; they need to be contained.

As far as the charger goes, as long as it has the ability to run off AC or DC, I don't think there'd be an issue (maybe have 2 chargers?). The DC one would run off the alternator, and the AC off mains, when you have it.

I am looking for a solution to plug and forget that manages itself ence my choice for the ctek as i already own a charger and it never failed mefor lead acid.

For lithium they have a specific onehttps://www.ctek.com/products/vehicle/lithium-xs but not sure it's the best choice as i dont know many chargers other than the iMAX B6

On their website the description mentions:

"The LITHIUM XS is specially designed for Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. With up to 5A of charge current available, it can charge LiFePO4 batteries from 5Ah to 60Ah and maintain up to 120Ah"

This ctekcharger sells for around 100, it's not the cheapest and i find that it doesnt give much information.

On the other hand, the iMAX B6 goes for about 25 and has a display plussome options that the ctek does not have.

Would this iMAX B6 be a good solution? I've seen it be used to charge 16 cells in one.

Other suggestions?

Yes, i am planning on getting some kind of metal cabinet with a key, strong enough to withstand explosions if (we hope not) it would occur. Also, if i get it to be air tight enough, it would help contain/avoid fire.

I had all planed for acid lead but now i'm lost... i will just forget the alternator for now and concentrate on SOLAR and MAINS.

So, i need a MPPT charger to supply current to a charger like the iMAX B6 ?!?!
 
Just remember that an iMAX B6 is a balance charger and not a BMS. You can have either BMS or balance charger but balance charging is well, manual.

BMS is 100% automated once you set your min/max values.

I would consider getting an 24-48v inverter as a replacement for a charger as it can charge your LiPo from grid and it will invert from DC to AC.

Thank you for that clear explanation. I will for sure prefer BMS system.

As for voltages, i found this on internet:

Rule of Thumb

12V 1,000W max
24V 2,000W max
48V 4,000W max

So i thing that 48V system would be more suitable for a variety of applications. I prefer overkill than not having power if needed.

Did not quite understand the inverter part. If i get a48v inverter, will it be working like:

panel > mppt > inverter > battery bank

mains > inverter > battery bank

is this right?

Never saw that rule of thumb before but based on Ohms law, the higher your voltage, the lower your current. Assuming same output.

12V @ 50A = 600W
48V @ 12.5A = 600W

48V allows for smaller diameter cables vs. 12/24V at the same wattage while having less amperage.

For the inverter, it would replace the existing charger/converter in your RV. Your MPPT controller would plug into the batteries directly and the inverter would plug into shore power, your batteries and your AC/DC panel.

The MPPT controller will charge batteries as needed based on the SoC (State of Charge) and available sun.

The inverter does everything else and the only 'gotcha' I can find is if you get 24/48V inverter, you would need a DC>DC converter as most DC items in the RV are 12V only. You can get around this by going with a 12V inverter but then you have to deal with thicker gauge wiring, which may not be a problem.
 
The problem with going 12V on lithium is you loose capacity on one end or the other. If you go 3s, you loose bottom end; if 4s you loose top end. Unless the inverter can handle the higher voltage input (which many do not).

I would recommend at least 24V; and this is not really because of wiring, but easy of installation and adaptations. With 24V you can use a buck converter to run your 12V devices. You can either put small ones where ever you need to do the conversion, or use one large one and run directly from the battery compartment. The problem with the former is you need many of them and wire them before every load. The problem with the latter is that a large buck converter can be pricey, and be less efficient.
Another reason to go 24V is because 7s is a lot easier to work with when charging and using an inverter. If you charge to 4.1V and discharge to 3.2V, you are within the majority of inverters voltage range. Same goes with 48V setups (notice we are excluding 36V; not because it wont work, but because that setup is usually a lot harder to work with and the components are usually more expensive)

Solar -> MPPT -> Battery -> Inverter -> AC Loads
Mains -> Lithium Charger -> Battery -> Inverter -> AC Loads

Now, with the second setup, I would actually have a bypass switch to disconnect the inverter all together. So, it'd be:

________/
Mains -> |
________\
__________--> AC Loads
 
lennoxlewis: The rule of thumb you found is weird. I got 14000W nominal on 48V system here.... ;) Its all about what they can deliver and thickness of wires
 
Once again, thank you very much for your informative answers. I need to be honest, i didn't understand fully some parts of your answers but i am slowly getting to understand with some side google searches.

I will focus on 48V system from now on as i understood it would be the most versatile option.

I will not be in a van on the long term, so, what i am building now should be also capable of moving to a off grid house in the future.

Lithium-Ion(18650) not, they tend to burn when overcharged, also cell voltage is different.
You can't use it for 18650.

Plug-in and forget about it is not so easy with recycled cells

Great information there. Already forgot the CTEK option but that makes me forget it even more :p
 
due to the cycling that RV's usually have.. i'd seriously look at a LiFePO4 system... many more cycles... huge weight savings...
