Grid Tie Leaf Battery

Looking for suggestions for Battery Charger and Inverter to sit in parallel to my existing Hybrid system.

My existing setup is 18.5Kw of panels, into 2 x SolarEdge and 1 x StorEdge inverters. The StorEdge is setup to run a backup panel using the LG RESU 10H battery. I have a grandfathered UtahNetMeter plan which gives me 1:1 credit for the next 17 years. The new battery project is a hobby to increase my self consumption, and I haven't seen anyone document a successful setup for adding an additional battery to the StorEdge.

I have procured a 2012 Nissan Leaf battery and working on tearing it down. I will be mounting it in a old HP Server rack that I have.Leaning toward purchasing the Batrium for BMS.

Now my questions:
1. I only want to charge when I have excess solar power being exported. I could tie into the RS-485 bus on the SolarEdge to see the current values or install a new CT Meter. I don't need a MPPT charger as I will be charging the batteries from Grid power. Thoughts / Suggestions on a charger?

2. Inverter - I already have backup power covered (via the StorEdge). I would like to increase self consumption by injecting power into the house to accommodate the shortfalls of Solar. Thoughts / Suggestions on a inverter?

Thanks for your opinions.

Has anyone considered or attempted to connect a 48 Volt LiIon string to a SolarEdge Power Optimizer?

If the theory would work, I have 8 x 6S batteries that could each connect to a SolarEdge P300 or P320 optimizer and feed one of my existing inverters. The P300 optimizer is rated for 8-48 volts at ~10amps. This would allow me to utilize my existing inverter, meter, and backup panel.

Hello Sledgeek,
Though located on another continent, perhaps follow this thread from a guy from Norway.
https://www.photovoltaikforum.com/s...attery-in-an-sunny-island-setup--t102414.html
At the time, 2014, not many bms's around that could communicate with inverters.

I suggest to have a look at the SMA Sunny Island
SMA has a product line for the USA.

I have got an equivalent system using Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV batteries 72Kwh + REC bms (soon to be replaced by a Batrium) and SMA Sunny Island 8.0
see my introduction page.

I sincerely do not recommend to use a Solaredge power optimizer as an interface to your existing solar inverters.
Simply not designed for that purpose.

Do you have a one-line diagram of your setup using the Sunny Island? I have spent quite a few hours today researching the hardware and have a few questions after I see an example of how someone has interconnected it.

Hello Casey

I've checked the USA website and found this

http://files.sma.de/dl/1353/Designing-OffGridSystem-PL-en-23.pdf

Both REC BMS and Batrium BMS can use the can protocol of the SMA Sunny Island range.
However I now would be using Batrium above REC

Batrium:https://www.batrium.com/pages/how-to-control-a-sma-sunny-island-inverter-charger-with-a-watchmon
REC:http://www.rec-bms.com/BMSSMA.html.

besides the Photovoltaik forum with the man from Norway Leaf story
here's another one
bit in english, most in German, but hey, we have google translate
http://okedv.dyndns.org/wbb/index.p...rojekt-batteriespeicher-fuer-daheim/&pageNo=1
on page ten I write a little on my learning curb.
