Projects: The New Cell Counter!

Back in 2017, as the community started to grow, we began speculating how many cells have been recycled and put back into use that would have otherwise ended up in landfills, discarded, or melted down for scrap. This led to the creation of the Cell Counter. Since then, we have tracked over 350 individual projects containing a combined total of over 400,000 recycled 18650 cells! And that's only a fraction of the projects out there. The original Cell Counter was intended to track used/recycled cells only and there was quite a bit of disappointment when people couldn't add new or other form-factor cells.

Over the past few months, I have been working to redesign the cell counter and figure out how we can incorporate all the possible variations that exist. This includes a person having multiple projects, a project having multiple cell types, form factors, and conditions, as well as basic sorting, filtering, and statistics reporting. The rewrite has taken a longer than I originally planned, but it's finally ready!

The Cell Counter has been renamed to Projects and is accessible via the link in the top-right navigation area of the forum. All projects from the Cell Counter have been copied over with a default name and cell type entry. You can review and revise any information as needed, as well as create additional projects for any smaller builds you may have, such as portable power, boat/trolling power, UPS conversions, etc. At minimum, please take a moment to give your project a name!, that way they're not all listed as "Unnamed".

The way we are suggesting a project be structured is that each "string" of battery packs be added as a separate entry. For example, in the screenshot below, the person started with 7 battery packs of 80 recycled cells connected in series (7s80p). The average cell capacity in this setup was 2200mAh. A few months later, the person decided to add 7 more packs of 100 new cells connected in series (7s100p) for added storage capacity. This new battery bank had an average cell capacity of 2400mAh. Both strings of battery packs are entered as separate items to provide a more detailed overview of your project as well as more accurate statistics.


You'll notice too that some projects also contain pictures. When you link your project to the corresponding thread in the DIY Battery Project Builds forum, any images you upload to the first post of the thread will automatically be added to your project page. You can edit and update the images in the first post at any time.

The Projects page is still a work-in-progress. We welcome any suggestions you may have and reports of bugs you may find (please). Some of the planned functionality still being developed includes a detailed statistics reporting page, column sorting, and a set of tools for moderators to help manage the data. You can request additional chemistries and formfactors be added to the drop-down lists, but we will only be adding those that are commonly used - not specialized or unique batteries.

Cell chemistry (Lead-acid could be grouped for simplicity) - adding the cell voltage will help some choose a chemistry ! :

Problem adding all thos is that most of us mix LiIon types in same batch

surely not within the same sub  project ?

I use 100% LCO (lithium Cobalt Oxide) – 3.6V so I am fortunate in that regards.  but youve already got project mixed chemistry so why not make the chemistry selection like the old country selection method.  ie off/notincluded until its requested?  my $0.02 ..



EDIT(add): I would like it if sorting could be done by region please.  specifically NZ and AU, along with Indonesia and surrounds in same filter.  five eyes filter (AU NZ US UK CA) would also be appreciated.  maybe other members have group requests, but thats all of mine.

just added my project ... but, i can not save the "brand new" condition, i can select it but it wont save... (condition stays at "recycled" )

DCKiwi: 95%+ of us mix 18650 cells in our banks with a nominal of 3,6/3.7V. Not an issue since you can have Mixed pack as alternative too Smile

Completelycharged: Isnt LiFe 3.2/3.3V nominal? I cant find a LiFe mentioning 3.6V nominal in my papers. Or perpahs it should have been LiIon ?

Im more interested in seeing what chemistry people have ... the nominal voltage is used in calculating WH i get that, and need to know what SLS is using for each chemistry ... but surely we're not quibling over 100mV ?

I cant see any alternative for 'mixed' in chemistry drop down, is that what you mean daromer?

The 100mV diff in nominal is not anything that changes the usable energy in our builds as is if you ask me. You can even see manufactures have all from 3.6 to 3.65 to 3.7 on same Chem... Dont ask me why Smile

The chem people use wont be doable as of today unless you look at builds based on new cells. Not many sort them on chemistry as is and doubt that will change in a bigger sense due to the extra work. Useable? Out of statistical sense perhaps but I think most people dont even know the difference and will just pick the wrong one. Not many can diff on LiPo and LiIon as example.

In current list we only have it as LiIon and that effectively consider most of the Li based types around 3.6-3.7V nominal i would say.

It was being saved correctly but the display was broken. It's fixed now, thank you :-)

I also added a few more form factors and chemistries from the proposed list above. I don't see a reason to split out the 3.6/3.7 types as most people aren't even going to know which types they have and will be all mixed anyway.

It accepts up to 1000Ah now. We can raise it higher if needed.
