Hooking up inverter to center tap transformer
#11
I think nrm21 is (hypothetically) thinking of the regular utility supply pole transformer.
A grid tie designed inverter should have no issue with powering up into that.
If you tried with a non-grid tie type, you'd get fireworks....

If you get a transformer with two separate 120V secondaries (not center tapped) then you can also join one pair of wires together to get a center tap (check them so they are out of phase not in phase as they connection would otherwise be in parallel...
Primary : 240V 0V
Secondary : 120V 0V 120V 0V (isolated secondaries - can be put in series or parallel)
Secondary : 120V 0V 120V (auto transformer secondary)

"This will cause the transformer to overheat as only "part" of it is functioning at high output." : not entirely correct, as long as the wires are not overloaded either phase can be run 100%. The issue with running them 100% is a factor of the I^2 R losses unless your running it at a too high voltage and the saturation losses will then also add to the heating..

The issue over grounding is partly resolved by the isolation of primary/secondary in the transformer, it will not work with a full autotransformer and the result may be your battery -ve wire could end up at 120V if the 0V export line of the inverter is grounded to the case..

Hi, I'm new on this forum, I'm assembling one 48v to 220ac using a chinese board and 3000va toroidal transformer. My question is; this transformer has 2 primary of 55v 1 secundary 230v, i added onother secundary 26v to handle the board. Can i use the inverter, not semoutaniusly, but use it in 110ac and 220ac? without causing issues for the board or to the transformer?. OBS: my use will not exceed 1500 watts. Thank you.

I was debating to get a 240V 4048 and then getting an autotransformer before. I already have a 5kva transformer for my pip2424 and it will take a 120V to 240V or 120-0-120V. But it takes an awful amount of idle loss (around 60W). So that's why I wanted to go to the autotranformer route if i were to get a 240V pip4048. Never did try to prove it out though since I managed to find another unit that has split phase.

Outback and Victron makes one.

Hello,not2bme, thank you.  I made some tests, using the inverter in several ways, but only no more than 50watts. Worked fine, but i'm not sure if i will works for long time.
