Help with Hybrid Inverter selection
#1
I've been doing a lot of investigation into hybrid inverters, which is causing me some confusion. So maybe this forum can help.
Basically what I am looking for is a 3-5kW inverter that does the following:
1) Can use grid, solar, or battery to power loads. Prefer to use solar with grid assist when needed to power loads; not only one or the other.
2) Can charge the battery when sufficient solar or grid is available.
3) Can power loads from solar and/or battery when grid is down.
4) Can use battery to power loads at night time then automatically switch over to grid when battery is low.
5) Use 48v powerwall battery, no HP batteries.
6) Under no circumstances can it feed power to the grid. It is illegal where I am located.
7) Low to medium price range.

I don't know if most hybrid inverters can be programmed this way. Just looking at the manufacturer's websites it is hard to tell whether or not it will fulfill these requirements without looking through all of the installation and configuration manuals. I appreciate those of you that are knowledgeable and take the time to share that knowledge.

1. Most is either or. But off grid can do AC charging and then convert up to the AC load. Note that Off grid is Grid -> Battery. And Solar -> Battery. ANd then Battery -> Load. Meanwhile a hybrid is: Solar -> Bus, Grid <-> Bus. Battery <-> Bus and then Bus => Load output    Ie a hybrid can transfer energy in muyltiple ways. Thus ALOT more expensive.
2. ok
3. Off grid or Hybrid only.
4. All do this
5. All 48V units do this
6. Then its Offgrid only you should use. Hybrid does not come with approval for most off grid places....
7. No problem but it cost more in terms of efficiency and warranty...

Thanks Daromer for the feedback, but answer number 6 confuses me....off grid only.
I'm sure I have seen hybird inverters with UPS mode where grid can be used to charge the battery and then when the grid is down the battery can be used to power the load and power is not sent back to the grid. Can you help me understand your answer? If I want to use power from the grid but never send power back to the grid, why does it have to be off-grid only inverter.

Thanks.

Perhaps check Victron:
not cheap, but good, 5 year warranty, works with can connect to Batrium, Rec-bms, Simpbms, out of the box.
do read manual for your wishes

For me hybrid systems work the best for small or residential PV plants.
In SA we can’t feed back into the grid so there is no real benefit of install a grid tied system at home when it is only producing power when no one is there.
Why I like this system is has both the functionality of a grid tied inverter and off grid
It is able to send power to the main load so grid power only supplements my usage when I have periods of heavy usage.
I can set it to use the batteries to supplement the load in the evenings, I have set mine to use 60% of the battery capacity the remaining 40% is kept for power outages which we have regularly in SA.
By using batteries and running geyser and heavy loads in daylight hours I am able to utilise my production capacity more efficiently.

I am using a Goodwe
It is well priced in for the SA market check spec you should have something similar.
