Can you point me towards some decent battery equalisers? Most I see are for lithium these days. And those that do list lead acid seem to list every type of battery, and have very little if any details etc.

Just search battery equalizer instead of BMS or battery balancer.
Or you can take a blue balancer. For 4 x 12V you need 3 of them.

That diagram isn't really the best representation of piping for electrical wiring.

In a parallel wired battery bank... drawing each polarity from opposite sides, should resolve these types of basic issues.  Are you saying it won't because I see otherwise. 

That said the OP has a totally new set of problems with his battery selections.
