ABB SACE S5 - Direction of flow

Hey All
I was just watching @DavidPoz work on hooking up an ABB SACE shunt-trip and he said that battery should connect to the top and load to the bottom.   Of course mine is hooked the other way -  battery hooked at bottom and load at the top.

How important is this?    What if its 'just a shunt-trip' and not intended to be a circuit breaker - e.g. I have other circuit breakers for overload draw from the battery.

You should follow the directions in the breaker itself. They should have arrows om the Side showing it.

Flow is Always top till bottom.
Though... With a battery it goes 2 ways so its not an electric problem but more of an issue with normal procedures for this device.

Your right, electricity flows both ways (charge/discharge).   
What are you thinking of when you say ".....but more of an issue with normal procedures for this device."     What is an example of a 'normal procedure'  ?

In consensus to be able to easily follow it should never be hot on the under side when a breaker is turned off. This is what you miss and an electrician may be confused.

All or all decent inverters will never have anything on their battery input without battery attached = this will be ok no matter what way the current will flow when in operation.
Thats why you should follow it.

Or place it flat, unless the manufactures require to be mounted one way for operational purposes.

It flows both ways but the side with greater potential (generally the battery side) should be entering up top.  Some breakers are direction, some are not, but I still install in this way.



The wiring diagram clearly shows the load at the bottom.
