Built battery pack for Kweld spot welder

Hello again,

I bought a Kweld spot welder and it came in last week, (I don't want to solder to my batteries). I bought some SPIM08HP's to power it. I built it in a 7s config and the Kweld would not calibrate. The error message was "overcurr". The battery pack was too much for the Kweld. I downsized the battery pack to 6s and it works just fine.

So anyone buying a Kweld spot welder and using SPIM08HP's don't go higher than a 6s configuration.

Did you read the documentation on what battery is recommended?

The battery should be min 800A capable and not above 2000A.
Input voltage for welding: 4V - 30V, enabling the use of ultracapacitors

I read on the esk8 forum that a couple of people tried using the SPIMs and could only get a 4s 800a setup before overcurrent. So are you getting past calibration with a 6s? How many amps?
I have the SPIMs too.... hate it that i didn't try.

I just ponied up and bought a Turnigy Graphene 3s 6AH green 75C which pushes 1500a (recommended in the literature).

Absolutely LOVE the kweld though and can't believe how smooth it is compared to the suunko.

I did:

Turnigy nano-tech 3S/5000mAh/130C Lithium Polymer battery (link). I have stress tested one of them for several complete discharge cycles, and it shows no visible swell thereafter. The measured current is 1300-1500 amperes.

Turnigy graphene 3S/6000mAh/65C Lithium Polymer battery (link). These do not show any swell after a few full power discharge cycles, but I have no data on their life span yet. The current level is comparable with the nano-tech model.

Ultracell UXL65-12 (link). According to feedback from a user, the current reported by kWeld is approx 1000A when tested with 0.15mm nickel strips.

Bosch SMT 31-100 (link). According to feedback from a user, the welding current reported by kWeld is approx 1400A.

The SPIM08HP's are 8000mAh/200C. It has a higher constant and burst charge than the above batteries. If I remember right, when I did a few test spot welds it showed that 1600A was used.

Seems to be good for the Kweld. Or am I misreading specs?



With 7s it was overcurrent, I dropped it to 6s and it works find. Calibrated first try. I will have to double check but I think it said 1600A was used.

Did a test this morning. At 5J the Kweld used 1762A

Its not only about current but voltage.

6s is 2* the Power to 3s that is a standard recomendation. Dont forget that.
