"12v" panel 24V battery
#1
Can you charge a 24V battery bank using a 12V solar panel and MPPT charge controller

I think that the answer to this is yes but I’d just like a sanity check on this.

From what I understand  The charge controller will increase the voltage to what is needed to charge a 24V battery  ( but amperage  will drop as a consequence ) and  the overall wattage from the panel will be retained ( minus a small loss through the DC-DC conversion)

is that right ?

You can use a Boost style Charge controller like the mpt-7210a

There is no such thing as a 12V panel. It depends on the charge controller. If it is supported you can have a 12V battery behind a 200V solar array. Charge controllers have input and output specs regarding the voltage ranges.

It's about running the panel at it's max power point voltage and matching that as efficiently as possible to the battery & it's range of voltages.

Most chargers need the input from the panel to be more than the battery - the one mentioned above is unusual being able to boost.
Running off solar, DIY & electronics fan :-)

Most chargers need the input from the panel to be more than the battery - the one mentioned above is unusual being able to boost.

For a single 12/18V panel into a 24V battery I would use one of the cheap boost controllers from ali/eb. Specifically the one listed as a 1200W 20A boost controller that lists for around $15.

Cheaper than the 7210 (I have had one for 2 years - ok but not great - bought before the 1200W came around - mine has an issue with tracking when cloudy and no fan control appart from a matchstick in the fan). The 7210 can on ther other hand double up as an alarm clock with the fan switching on at sunrise.... good for when you are in a 20ft container and the door is shut !

The 1200W (ignore the 1200W rating as it would set on fire at 1200W) has 3 variable resistors for setting the current limit, voltage output and more importantly the cut off voltage. Set you voltage output to the float charge voltage.

The cut off can be set to just under the MPPT volatage for your panel and you then get a MPPT... CC CV charger for around$15, Granted no display or anything but cheap functionality.... and should just as efficient as a 7210.. or near enough...
