15s120p Harvested NCR18650B Powerwall

I’m new here, but I wanted to share my build (so far). This build is coming from 100s of the same “dead” laptop batteries I purchased over the last few months.  All containing the same Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mah batteries.  All the batteries are between 3100-3400 mah, and between 58-98 oms.  Im still testing the batteries with 4 ZanflareC4’s, but I’m down to the last few hundred batteries.  Once they're all tested and put together on this site sorting page(awesome btw).  I’ll actually start putting it together (crazy).  The only purpose of this bank is to power my soon to own Tesla Model 3 (I’m still in line). Im lucky enough to have a job that allows me to work from home, but I’d love to be able to work from all over my city, and not worry about paying for so much gas.  I also live with roommates, so the electric bill would sky rocket when my cars arrives. (I live in California)

I also own 12 320w solar panels, with only 8 installed so far.  I’m currently using them to charge lead acid batteries(Victron 150/85 MPPT), connected to a pure sine wave Inverter(Samlex 2000w), which powers my home office.

Anyway,  here’s what I’ve done so far.  I took AverageJoes setup and bought a $30 Server Cabinet on Craigslist. Installed some sliding server racks as well.  I took lithiumsolar set up and welded 4 8-gauge bare copper wires (14” long) to a 1/8” x 3/4” 6 inch copper square bars (Terminal Bars) and drilled a hole in the center for the screws, nuts and washers

I hardly knew anything when I started, but learned a lot from this site and their corresponding YouTube channels.  So thank you to this community for answering all my questions.

I still have a lot of work left before my car arrives (oct-dec) but if there’s enough interest.  I’ll create a YouTube channel and start doing updates on my progress.  Here are some pictures I’ve taken over the past 6 months:

Awesome!! That's a LOT of green! Tongue

Welcome to the forum, and the DIY recycling community. That's a lot of work you've done. I suppose working from home helps a lot with time management and being able to keep tabs on the cells as they do their thing in the chargers.

I've also started off knowing next to nothing when I started on this forum. Saw HBPowerwalls video a little over a year ago and and was like Wow! I can do that! Joined the forum shortly afterwards. Been a yr and half now. I'm still learning, and daromer, wim, pete, raven and some others bring my errors to light and correct me which I love. Can't learn properly if no one tells you what's wrong.
Keep up the good work. Again, welcome, and look forward to some more updates. Cool

1 question before I leave, why 15s? Is that the voltage range of your inverter? (ok, so 2 questions Tongue )

Thanks for welcoming me.  I was very hesitant about posting anything, but I’m glad I did it.  Mainly because I’m hoping for input from other builders (like you said)

To answer your question.  Yes.  It’s 15 because my Inverter can handle up to 64v.  I’m only charging up to 4.0v per pack and not letting it get lower than 3.2v (cut off).

Bring on the constructive criticism.  Like you said.  How else will I learn.

Hbpowerwall was a big inspiration for me to start the build, but when averagejoe put his in a server cabinet.  That was my “I can do this” moment. 

And speaking of green.  I was thinking of painting the side server cabinet walls black, and painting that same lime green Tesla “T” when I’m finished.  Just a thought.

Working from home does help, but I’m in my office most of the time.  That’s why I have all the batteries testing in here, and everything else is in the garage.  That way I can keep an eye on them.

I’m excited to keep going, but most of my prep is done.  These cells take 14+ hours to test, and I’ve done over 2000 (counting cells that I didn’t use).  This project has thought me a lot, but non more than.... patients. I’ll keep you posted on the build.  The moment I’m waiting for is when my car arrives, and I plug it into my power wall for the first time. Can’t wait!

That makes sense, going with 15s. You get a bit better efficiency out of that. You could even go with 4.1 and still be within range and get a bit more capacity (how much, not sure)

Wow 14hrs per cell. That's a long time. But, you are working 3100+mAh. Were you discharging at .5A? Not bad, but at least it gives you real world performance.

I tell some people I work with or those who say "Thanks for waiting" that Doctors and I have a lot in common. They usually give me that "Huh?" look, and I say "We both have lots of patients" Wink This is a project that you cannot rush. Everything must be done in it's due time. Rushing things gets you nowhere, and could even set you back a notch or two. Or worse, burn up some wires.

Yeah. I might do 4.05v per pack, if I do go any higher. I thought about 4.1v, but I’m trying to keep it in that long life spectrum. Although what’s .05v right? Smile

Yeah. The testing is done at .5a. I had already purchased 4 Zanflares before I realized I should have gone with the Opus. Mine only allows me to charge and discharge at .5a while in “Normal Test” mode. Hence 3-4 months of just testing cells. Haha

The tesla design the will eventually go on the one side of the server cabinet you’ll be able to see. I’m just not sure if I want to paint and/or design something, or just paint it over and be done. Either way it’s changing. My server cabinet looks like it was designed in 1993. It’s strong, but looks old.

0,05v makes a difference, you will see when you are charging your batterybank up ... takes lots of energy to go from 4.05v to 4.10v. But as you say, you will gain in lifetime i guess.
I charge mine up to 4.10v, works for me, i only use about 25% on a normal day and never did go below 40% Soc .

Again, very nice build, the only thing i would concider is to connect your busbars together on the other side of the terminals, so you have a kind of loops... Depends on the loads you planning for.

I agree.  Limegreenpanasonics4ever! Haha.  I almost took the heat shrink off in the beginning, but the more I collected, the more the colors grew on me.  Now, the whole server cabinets color scheme will be those colors.

I know .5v does make a difference.  I’m probably going to sit tight at 4v each, but I still have a little time before I can organize the packs (only pre tinned atm).  So I might change my mind.  Once my Batrium arrives.  I might move it up to 4.1v.  

Thanks for the like.  It’s just the beginning, but it’s been a really fun side project.  I plan on charging my car.  So anywhere from 1500w to 7500w will be the load.  (Aims 10kw PSW Inverter 240v)

Can you explain what you mean by “connect your busbars together on the other side of the terminals, so you have a kind of loop?” I believe that’s what I’ve done.  Not sure what you mean.  I’ll take any advice you have.

I mean connecting the loose ends of the busbars together on the other side of the terminals... it is a plus on the conductive side of things with high currents (7500W with 60V = 125A ) might be worth the effort...

I am sure others will give there opinion, this is just mine Wink
