I've unsuccessfully tried to source a stand-alone inverter that has 2x120V 60Hz lines (out of phase to make 240V)...The goal is to power an off-grid240V well pump from battery (instead of generator). Any thoughts or experience?

Split-Phase Inverter in the US are hard to come by. There is one that some have used here, can't recall it off hand though.

Have you thought about going with a DC pump instead? It might be cheaper in the long run. They make 48VDC well pumps.

Have you considered the AIMS inverters?

I have the 10kW model. It works great, starts pretty much everything I've thrown at it so far with no problems.
