60kW Whole House Powerwall build
#11
This is amazing and exactly what I'm doing at my house. Also a Model S driver! I've got 12 of those battery modules coming in next week. I saw the link to the 12kW inverter. Yours has the proper firmware on it to set option 9 as li-ion and not overcharge the batteries? I bought an earlier 6kW version that doesn't have option 9 set to do anything special, I believe.

Your post is gonna help with my build a lot. My 12kW of solar goes mostly unused here (TVA doesn't buy back), so my intent is to disconnect from the grid.

Since posting I have added plexi to the front of the pack to prevent my car door from hitting anything electric. I can't really place it with the packs facing the wall as there is parts that stick out so I wouldn't be able to bolt it to the wall. There's also the small issue that with the modules loaded it's over 1k lbs and there's no way I can flip it loaded.

Have you thought about an auto transfer switch?

+1 on the fuses. Cheap "insurance".

How do you like the inverter?

Have you done a capacity test to see how much life are in the cells?

Thanks

The Genready panel has an ATS built as does the inverter. I mainly use the panel ATS to bypass the inverter when I need to do maintenance to the system to not get killed by my GF for not having power in FL. The rest of the time the panel ATS stays on GEN which puts the house on the inverter and since the inverter has it's own ATS while there's sunlight and I'm generating solar the house stays on the grid to sell back my over production ($50-100/month) when solar stops producing the ATS on the inverter switches the house to battery power.
It's a little complicated to understand unless you look at the diagram on the first post and know the working modes of each device. I can probably create a quick workflow diagram if you want more details.

The inverter works great, it has a ton of peak power to the point where my AC could start fine with the water heater running and no soft start (I did install one though). I just wish it had a way for me to get data out of it, I'm a software guy.

I haven't yet done a full capacity test, but I did put the house on a simulated grid failure for a full day and I used about 30% of the pack.

Yea, the 12 and 15kW models have the li-ion profile, but if you really needed to you can do the same thing I did to the DIP selector and use an external controller to tell the inverter when to start and when to stop charging. Let me know if you want more info.

Love the build!

How quickly does the ATS in the panel switch? Does anything shut off while its switching?

The ATS on the panel takes about a second to switch over but I don't really care about that since I'm controlling it with my own controller which only switches it whenever I need to do maintenance. 99% of the time the the panel ATS sits on Gen which is the battery inverter which passes the grid to the house via its own ATS and it switches in less than 10ms.

Essentially I only use the panel as a bypass switch to bypass the battery inverter. I thought about getting throw switch instead but the price was about the same and the panel gave me more space for other circuits.

Yeah, I'd love some of the more technical details! My batteries showed up yesterday. I shot you a PM. Are you on the discord channel yet?

I use APC UPS(s) to protect computer/TV during ATS switch-overs.   Eventually, I consolidated several into 1 'big one' and ran a set of plugs to offices / tv areas so I only needed 1 larger APC UPS instead of 9 smaller ones.

When you say you combined. Are you saying you found a way to sync their sine wave output to combine their output? or are you using isolated AC inverters with a common DC source
