Hi Second Life Storage community,

I have recently been getting into refurbishing old 18650 batteries from used laptops. I've tested all of them and now I want to start assembling a portable battery but I'm finding a hard time determining what BMS I need.

Is there a thread here which already has details in how to select a BMS? If so, could some one please link it? It would be much appreciated!
If not, is there any tips that anyone could offer in selecting a BMS?

Thanks!

if i amnot mistaken there isa chapter in the faq, for the sake of a more detaild description of you what you want.

First the FAQ are indeed a great source of basic information

For a mechanical guy like me it has been difficult to process all the options and take the first step of building a bigger battery given the safety implications if I get it wrong.

Just have to look at the video a few days back on the exploding fun mobile.

I look at all the options on fleabay and struggle to understand if I am even close to making a good choice. All I can do is take it slow and purchase several and Test test test for my application. If a vendor tryies to slip me quality rejected will the end result be like the video?

Anouther improvement to consider would be a section on secondary components like thermal fuses, power meters, trays and special tools. Not only to understand why you may want to consider to us different options but What to look out for if selecting these components..

Chablis, your reasoning is totally acceptable and understandable.

Still, you should understand that there is no easy answer in a complex technical situation, which for instance in this case includes the charger as well.
I can confirm that you are on a board with lots of knowledgeable people, which all go at pains to help everybody as far as they can. Still, some questions and basics repeat, and for that is the faq. For instance.
btw, i am a mechanical guy as well... so dont worry, all is possible.
