So in theevent of a short circuit with a pack of 18650 batteries, how would a battery management system respond? Would it shut down the entire battery pack or just the cells which contain the short circuited battery or batteries? I will be using the BMS in the picture below. It will be attached to a 14S9P battery pack. Thanks for any information anyone can offer.

Simple answer: A BMS does notprotect a pack from internal shorts.Thisis why most people fuse ata cell level

If a BMS is fitted with short circuit protection, it will disconnect the load from the batteries in the event of an external short. However, I would still recommend using a fuse anyway. Many will only disconnect the load for a short time, then reset.

If a battery has an internal short the BMS will be unaware of this. While the BMS may disconnect the load, due to a undervoltage being detected, it still won't prevent the other parallel cells dumping charge into the cell that has shorted.

Most BMS have over current protection. It should disconnect the load output if you run to high current but not all have this. No matter what YOU NEED a fuse or 2. The BMS only look at the load port and not individual cell as such. It can though disconnect the Load if a single cell goes below set voltage but once again it depends on the BMS.

Your image doesnt tell much.

I appreciate the response. I do not have a spec sheet but here is a link with more information about this BMS:

Your responses make sense because there would be no way for the BMS to know and stop an internal short. This forum is awesome. Thanks again.

I do believe your link is not going to work. You need to redo it, please.

Sorry about that. The link included the name of the vendor from which I purchased the BMS so I guess it was censored when I tried to post it. I think I understand the basic issue now so I appreciate everyones response.

Yeap that link wont work here :) Its banned.
