Chris's Build Thread
#51
Well. It turns out that my local jurisdiction is really getting caught up on the inverter not being listed with ETL or UL. So I am selling that and I got a great deal on a refurbished AIMS 8kW for 33% off which brought them much closer together in price. That inverter is listed with the ETL. So that will be here Friday. I am trying to return the 6kW, but in case that can’t happen, I am putting up for sale as well.

I made some more progress today as I wait for my permit. I thought I would get started on some of the work with some guidance of my electrician. Broke out the brick ribbon from the walkway around the house and trenched so I can run the data lines for the ATS and solar wire runs, and separately the 240v (split-phase) from the inverter. Then I ran the the conduit along side the house close to the house entry points for the electrician to take over. I hope to hear on the permit very soon.

Permit approved! I pick it up on Monday. In the next couple weekends I will put the solar up. My electrician is coming Friday to install the ATS and whatnot. Progress!

First off, congratulations on the permit! I have lots of questions. I see from your inverter thread, you are from the US. What did you put on the permit as far as the batteries go? How did the AHJ hold you up on the inverter not being approved by a NRTL, but not on the batteries, charge controller, BMS, etc.? You mentioned you were working with a solar designer, but that you will be installing them yourself over the next couple weekends. Did the AHJ give you any resistance about you performing that work? Just curious as I was going to start a thread on this very topic. Your the first I've seen actually get a permit for a diy powerwall!

Hey there.
Yes I am from the US, SF Bay Area California specifically. I told the plan review company my AHJ uses that I am making a DIY battery bank and they didn't mention anything about the UL listing. I don't know why they didn't get hooked up on the batteries and I can only hope the inspector doesn't have an issue. I did write a fairly detailed 'spec sheet' for the battery, which may have helped.  I did work with a solar designer for a bit, but that relationship didn't work out, quickly. So I did the entire permit package myself. The AHJ also appeared to have no issue with me doing the install myself. Let me know if you have any additional questions!

More updates. All the 6awg from the shed (inverter) and 24v control lines for the ATS have been run. The ATS IS ALSO 90% wired and ready to go.

ATS

Main disconnecting means between the meter and ATS, since my custom ATS is not rated for it. Neutral/ground bonding will be here for grid side as required by NEC (not done yet). Also the big red button is the remote control for the rapid shutdown for the solar arreay box to be mounted near the solar panels.

Breaker/disconnect on the shed with the equipment to deenergize the lines to house of need be. Ground/neuateal not bonded. Ground bonded to enclosure

The weather finally let up (it’s been gorgeous outside actually) and we made some good progress on the solar install. Hopefully finish it next weekend.

Panels are up and wire is run! The panels need a bath though.

This looks nice and clean! Lost track of this effort but caught up now.

Great job so far and fingers crossed on the battery bank approval/review.

NOTE - It is good that you spelled out clearly the build so that if there IS a question / concern you have something to reference since this is what they signed off on. I only had one issue in the past and having that detail in the earlier approved plan saved me.

Good luck!
