Faulty Opus BT - C3100 v2.2

I bet DarkRaven is going to love this because I know he hates these things,

but it seems my 2 week old opus is busted :/ slots 1 and 4 aren't behaving.

I kept inserting 4 batteries with good voltages on them but slot 1 keeps charging at about 43ma and not going anywhere, and slot 4 keeps saying its charging at 1443ma when its only configured for 1000plusthe registered cell voltage slowly drops from say 3.7v to 1v etc but if i manually check the cell with a voltmeter afterwards its still fine.

i went through 3 sets of 4 before i realised the slots were behaving exactly the same each time (I'm slow i know), so this morning when i realised this, i put 4 batteries in, behavior was the same so i swapped the healthy correctly charging cells in slots 2 and 3, with the "busted" ones in slots 1 and 4 and lo and behold, same thing.

had great fun sifting through tea bags and carrot shavings inthe bin trying to get those cells back thati though were busted :/

I've also got another opus already in the post... i ordered if before i realised this one was busted just to speed up the process, now im kind of wishing i bought something a bit higher grade instead :/
 
Nah, I'm not loving this. Your Opus went tits up and only because I think the Opus is distincly mediocre I'm not suddenly breaking out in tears of joy because we now have one less in the world! :)
And while I do think that the Opus is a bit crap this sort of thing can happen to every other charger as well. Things break occasionally, even the really good ones.

sure but everyone likes having their opinion reinforced XD

and true, hopefully the second one will be better... at least i have 6 charging slots now instead of 4 :rolleyes:
 
Opus works.. As long as it works. Its a cheap ass charger so what did you expect :) Im still waiting for one of mine to fail :p

I would though cry if my iCharger would die instead. That cost a fortune compare the opus chargers
 
I'm think about buying a 308 at the moment, as an upgrade over my D400 because I've built my batteries a bit larger than I first expected :)
I don't really need the 4010 but as it is only 40 EUR more than the 308...meh, don't know, will see :)
 
:) Yeah those are nice kits. I love my 308 and bought that for being able to do 7s packs.
 
Here's a big question, are all of those opus units legit units? Is it possible the ones that died soon are the knock-offs?

I propose that those who have had running units for months, if not years, open up their units and take pictures of the board top and bottom. Clear enough so we can see the labeling on the pcb.
And then likewise, those with failing units do the same so we can find out what's going on here.

It is quite possible also, that there is a design change between the ones that worked great and the ones that are now failing. If those recall the video post of Julian re-reviewing the MPPT charge controller he had once gave two thumbs up. He now gives two thumbs down as it is no longer what it used to be, even though the labeling on the outside is exactly the same.
 
I have so far not seen any "knockoffs". If you got an example for a genuine compare to knock off i would gladly look at that.
 
How can you tell if they are the knock offs (besides the obvious made in china, isn't everything made in china these days, even legit ones :p )

Hey Daniel, do you have a video on the chargers that are out and the pros and cons of each. eg some require external power which I only recently found out actually. Others have charging limits or limited features etc. I think that would be handy but I don't think I've searched extensively but might help others decide which to try.. disclaimer of course that it's only informative on your experiences and everyone should find their own info :)

I only had my first Opus for the last 2 days and so far so good (now I've just jinxed myself I bet).
 
I've seen claims that something like a cheap Opus clone exists, but I haven't seen any yet.

Chargers, especially popular ones, have been the target of cheap knockoffs before, most notably the SkyRC IMAX B6 and some of the Nitecore models. You can usually tell by the appearance, the build quality, the price and missing of the official specs.
 
tremors: No I dont have that myself. Its alot of time doing such a big review or comparision. Many chargers that do normal cells can be found on lygte.dk and they have extensive information about them :)
 
sooo update, turns out 2 of my batteries leaked into the charger.

I didn't realise before, there was brown rust/liquid dried on the negative contacts. check my batteries over and one has 2 tiny holes and another had a hairline fracture, both on the negative end.

i cleaned up the contacts and slot 4 seems to be working fine again but slot 1 didn't recover, if i look inside the spring mechanism etc i can still see white liquid (im guessing the electrolyte) inside. going to assume that slot is gone forever...

yeah, scratch that, slot 4 cuts out after about 45 minutes. bad luck for me. i remember smelling something funny at the time but i checked and couldnt see any leak etc.

oh well.

I did not want to create a new topic, so I will ask for your help here.

I have recently bought on Ali an Opus 3100 v2.2 but it doest quite strange things.

First of all, it does not charge up to 4.2 volts. Either it shows full charged at 4.2v but in reality the cells are between 4.10v and 4.14v or it shows full charged at 4.17v/4.18v and the cells are between 4.05v and 4.10v

At the discharge, it stops pulling Amps from the cells at 3.40v/3.50v (values indicated by the Opus).

The charge and discharge current are 500mA.

I have tried with 8 different cells and the result is the same.

Did I have a completely faulty Opus or I'm doing something wrong.

Used cells usually don't keep their end of charge voltage of 4.2V very long, if at all. It is normal that the voltages drops. Same for discharging, the voltage returns to the idle voltage once the discharge stopped so this is fine as well.
