Hi from Ontario Canada
I'm here to learn how to build a powerwall from new, old stock 18650s
I can purchase 1900 X 2200MAH cells that are new old stock if I act fast for 1.05US This looks good from what I have read.
I would like to end up with a 20KW battery eventually to store my solar and wind power.
I'mnew to this so help will be appreciated.

Welcome!

The price can be right if the capacity is fine. Get some cells and test them!

Though I would only pay 1/3rd of that price for new old stock :)

Thanks. I don't have access to less expensive cells and believe that I can build a 14Kwh pack from these new old stock cells. Does my math seem correct for 1900 X 2200 MHR cells?

1900*2.2*3.7 = 15.46kWh if they are like new. But if they are old stock they generally loose somewhere around 2-6% year stored. So before you calculate you need to test them.

Thanks again. I wll. I intend to build 14s Xp packs so that if I screw up one pack I don't lose the whole battery.

Any advice on the pack size for a 14s battery to keep my BMS price as reasonable as possible? As I understand it each "S" in a pack will require monitoring for a balanced system?

Each p pack will require it. 14s stands for 14 in series. p stands for number of cells in each of those packs.

If you want 1 spare ie 14s system and with 1 spare you get
15 total packs. 1900/15 = 126 cells in each pack. With that pack you need a decent BMS system if you ask me. You can always build smaller system or just go with that bigger sytem and hope a cheaper BMS can balance it. Atleast the Smart BMS i reviewed is minimum but the Batrium can be a good choice too.

Welcome fellow Canuckistanian.

$1 USD for a used 2.2Ah battery doesn't sound very good to me.

Here's aLINKwhere you can get NEW, PKCELL 2.2Ah cells for ~$2.36 CAD each.

Free shipping! :D

I think that you are saying that each pack could be 51.8 volts nominal? I have seen what i think are 3.7 volt packs (1s)and 51.8(14s) packs. My understanding is that for 1s packsit requires all 14 packs to work equally or you will not have enough power to run a large (48volt) inverter for anywhere near the capacity of the batteries.

Does this mean that I only monitor each pack with one monitor andthe Batrium? So theneach pack is pack is 14s 9p @ 51.8 nominal? and then each pack is paralleledwith the rest for 14s @ 126p? @51.8 nominal? Is there even a Batrium kit that will do this?

I am new to this and am reading as much as I can but don't have a clear understanding yet.

Thanks but that is 1000 cells that are 86 cents more expensive each than what I am buying. It would cost me $4500CAD with tax for these cells for 1900pc. Too rich for me.

Hi from Another Ontarian!! (How's it going eh) . that sounds like a gooD Buy if they are all good cells. I have spent about $200USD so far on batteries and gotten the rest for free. but I'm only at <500 cells. i had lots of low Mah and Bad ones.

True butthey're new. No need to test, no need to balance and they'll last a lot longer and wear more evenly. It was also just 1 example out of hundreds of people selling new calls. I will likely do this for larger projects unless I really feel like breaking apart 150+ laptop batteries.

I just pulled the pin and bought the cells. 1900 X Molicel 18650-2200 MAHfrom alarmhookup on ebay. He gave me a good price for buying them all. I wanted my 15Kwh battery to all have the same cells. He says that they all tested 100% and that the cell modem packs still had the terminal protector in place so they were never used. I will start a thread in the DIY powerwall prjects when all the bits and pieces arrive and I get started. Cheers

Hi Jdeadman, I bought the cells from Tom at alarmhookup on ebay.1900 X Molicel 18650-2200 MAH. He gave me a good price for buying them all. ($2887CAD including shipping and duty) I wanted my 15Kwh battery to all have the same cells. He says that they all tested 100% (said that they tested about a thousand out of the packs they broke down)and that the cell modem packs still had the terminal protector in place so they were never used. I will start a thread inpowerwall prjects when all the bits and pieces arrive and I get started.
Good luck with your project.

Nery nice. Mine is for my camper https://secondlifestorage.com/t-Canuck-RV-Battery and when me and my wife build a house I will be going off grid totally and Will be purchasing new cells. There are some great projects on here that I have been modeling mine after. have a look at the Instant powerwall he used new cells.
