Inverter Input Voltage Ranges

What are the input ranges inverters work with?

I always hear about 12V, 24V and 48V. But the batteries work within ranges. And those values, at least to me, seem to be based on Lead Acid Batteries.

So what rangers do typical inverters work with?
 
Hi Peter, standalone inverters are generally designed to work with lead acid batteries and the voltage ranges of that type of battery.

However, they are getting more and more sophisticated everyday and most decent inverters these days have configurable low and high voltage ranges so you can use them with different types of batteries.

I'd suggest googling different inverters and reading up on the specs of each to get a feel for what is out there.

The Tripplite sine wave inverter I am working with is supposed to handle up to 16V on the input:

I'm planning to test that with a 4S li-ion battery pack run at 4V/cell.
 
I've noticed most of the ones that bother to state the input range in the specs will handle 15V. I have a Xantrex 1000W that will handle 15.5 that I've tested. I'm doing the same thing. I'm making a bunch of 96P cells and will use them for a solar power wall in the future (when I can afford the equipment) but am using them now in a 4S configuration to use with my '12V' inverter. One thing that is very helpful is a new charger that I purchased that has four channels and can have the end voltage set from 3.9 to 4.2! The best part is that each channel can charge up to 10 amps so I'm balance charging 4 - 96P packs at the same time at 10 amps each :D ! I'm very happy with this charger.

Ive got a Combi-plus from Jaycar
1500w unit (does 2kW no problem)

Unit runs at up to 16v and also has a 70A charger built in.
LVD can be manually set as can the charge voltage range right up to 16v.

The unit can deal with up to 17.5v but will not supply a load at above 16v

The VICTRON PHOENIX series (800 and 1200VA) will go up to 17.3 according to the specs.
I plan on getting one of these next so i can get my cells up above my current 16v range.
