OOOOH my! I dont know about you but Li-Po battery packs scare the hell out of me, so easy to puncture or do some nasty stuff too!
this pack is a 36v (10 cell) at 10Ah, the other week when i took it out of the plastic shell i had said it looked like it was puffy, well after opening it i could see where i was wrong lol, there was more cells one side than the other... anyhoooo here is some pictures :)

the pack tests at 39.90v as you can see i kept it on something soft ;)

The chemical smell has made me feel ill from opening this for some reason

could i dismantle the cells and tab them on to my opus to test andcharge them? afterall the opus claims it can do 20,000mAh and these are only 10,000 mAh?

this battery seems to be over charged and long time do this, reason is lithium gas made inside and break some seals, you will smell some chemical, and pouches expand due to pressure inside, its dangerous now and battery needs to be disposed or soon will be a fire , be carefull

Why should a 36V battery be overcharged at 39.9V? This is obviously a 10S battery, fully charged it will have 42V.

LiPo cells aren't as stable as cylindrical cells, that is obvious. However they don't burst into flames just so. When they start to get puffy they have to be disposed of, but even then they aren't super-terribly-oh-my-god-we-are-going-to-die-dangerous. The most important thing when handling those is to not be afraid. If you are truly afraid you better but them away. As always, knowledge defeats fear. You have to know what you are doing and then you are fine.
But if they are smelling bad then at least one of the cells has failed and obviously that cell needs to be disposed of.

You can connect the good ones to you Opus but obviously you need to build some kind of adapter. It would be easier to use a charger with banana sockets and connect them with wires with banana plugs and crocodile clips.

I've had one of those scares from a laptop pack. It was practically identical to the other packs of the same design I was dismantling that has cells in it, but this one had pouches. So I started to rip into it just like any other and the pliers tore a hole into the pouch.
As I removed the pouches from the pack, the one got the hole in it I could actively see it swelling up. It went outside into a bucket of water.

I don't like pouches since they are much harder to remove the tabbing and separate them. Really easy to make sparkies.

And in several different ways! Really good ones of these are the best lithium technology has to offer in terms of high currents. Their internal resistance can be incredibly low, in the region of 1 or 2 mOhm. We are talking about several hundred amps easily from a relatively small battery which is something you could previously only get from bigger lithium batteries or lead acid batteries.

How do they smell?
Because, apparently, depending on chemistry, it can smell either like slightly burnt sugar, or a chemical solvent.
Edit: Also good gravy 2mOhm. I'd love to use these kinds of batteries in something like a portable spot welder.

right after a few days i have let the smell "evaporate" somewhat...

the closest thing i can say that it smells like is like if you open up a flight case and you got that new foam-sponge inside, that sort of smell now,
im not sure but im wondering if its the fiber board that they haveused to surround it or the "glue/adhesive" they used in the pack....

it also smells a little bit like fresh pvc electrical insulation tape but stronger, also the same type of smell if you open a fresh pack of band-aid plasters....

i hope these examples help you understand the smell i have off them now... at least its not making me feel sick now

Yeah, I've smelled it too and it's kinda like that. I haven't come across the burnt-sweet smell or anything. Mostly that acrid smell that almost doesn't want to leave your nostrils even when you leave to fresh air.

I think that smell is likesweet acetone. That's probably not a good thing from any perspective!

I do have quite a few LiPos though - this is about half of them...

So far I am getting about 60-70% being good. It's really hard to ignore cells when they have a capacity of 12.5 Ah.

I thought about using an ammunition tin to make a portable power source.

You guys are sniffing way to muchatyour cells.... bad habbit...;)

But they smell so gooood

Just don't decide to eat them. That'd be REALLY bad for you health. Altho, we might able to create a new plug in hybrid. You just sit in the seat and your automatically plugged in and charging the car :D :p

That's quite a lot. Sell them to someone who wants to build an e-bike. Pouch cells can be charged very quickly compared to lion cells. Most are happy to charge at 1c, so you can charge a 10ah cell at 10amps. And many will discharge at rates that are scary, 10c and up. My little RC runs 6s1p 4500mah lipo - good for about 100a. Apparently just one of these batteries can start a car. There are videos on youtube of people doing this. Not recommended though.

I would sell them except for the fact that the folks that gave them to me are an eBike manufacturer and I gave them my word I wouldn't do that.

I am still thinking about the ammo tin idea... a 200Ah USB charger would be good for while.

Please don't worry, the lipo cells not will exploded, not like Cylindrical battery cells(18650,26650,20700,21700etc). Lipo cells will cause fire when got inappropriate use. : )

This is true. Don't over draw, overcharge, peirce or puncture and you are safe.

Maybe if you were really unlucky one may swell enough to cause an internal short. Never seen this myself.

I have punctured a couple flying mini rc choppers, but never seen fire. Heat and smoke, but not fire.

This could also be said of cylindrical cells too. But, Murphys Law, if something can go wrong, it will.
