hi,

Is it wise too build a battery with different chemistry off li-ion cells?
And I meaning NMC with IRC?

Depends on application i would say.

Im not sure what IRC is though?

As long as nominal, max and minimal is in same place you can potentially use all capacity and that the charge algoritm is the same or close it will work perfectly fine as long as you base your currents on the lowest ones.

if above is not true then you need to think out a plan and where you want to use them.

For instance i mix LiFePo4 and Laptop cells that generally are a mix but around 3.6 and 3.7V nom. It works just fine.

16s vs 14s m8 :)

When i max out the LiFepo4 bank i get to 4V on the Li-ion. So it actually work pretty good. yes i wont utilize all capacity in the Li-ion unless i push the LiFe but on other hand they might be able to get closer in terms of cycles.

I was thinking the same thing when I read what Joost put. I didn't think about varying series of the packs. I was at first thinking you were putting them in the same pack. But different packs, excellent!

Totally acceptable. But and it a big butt (lol) match voltages with difference in series packs. So like above 16s life and 14s LiPo . I have a 2s lead acid and 7s LiPo and it works perfectly. But I have a BMS on the LiPo and I watch the lead acid. Still looking for a solution to keep them balanced but they have only been about 20mV off (under load not charge).

True. But a wise man once told me "whether or not it's supposed to work, if it does work then it's a good solution"

Do you have separate bms for each chemistry?

Yes. And separate switches and fuses.

Yes you have to as they are different voltages per cell.
