Also with a nominal voltage at 3.5 (3 cells) looks to me LifeP04
Ignore my last message they are 18650's Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide1 LiNiCoAlO2 9% Co)
I know because I bought some at a scrap yard near me. They contain a cell made by boston power that looks like this:
They look like double 18650s and while they would work in a powerwall, they wouldn't fit into any standard cell holder.
The reason you are seeing those packs everyware is because those are medical battery packs that are used in very expensive hospital equipment and one day one of the packs caught fire and killed someone. Boston power was sued by the hospital for millions. Then hospitals across the country replaced their medical packs with new ones while the packs with these boston power cells were dumped because hospitals can't afford to deal with another exploding battery pack.
Jdeadman from what I found, it is 2 cells in 1, not sure if 18650, regardless I'm not bothering with it because of the recall. No matter how well they test, I wouldn't trust them unattended
Well, the big question is about the recall. Were they recalled because of faulty cells, or were they recalled because of faulty charge controllers? The CC's could have been over charging the cells and that'd have caused the fires. Or could it have been from a faulty construction of the packs and they were pierced some how?
I'd keep them separate and do several tests on them and keep a close eye on them. But that's mho.
Well I bought 3 of these packs for pretty cheap to test. I will do a teardown and inspection video once they arrive. Any time there is a battery issue, 90% of the time it's the controller, BMS or allowed range of the discharge circuit that fails the system and harms the battery. So I took a gamble. we will see if it pays off. If 75% of the cells are good I will have gotten them for about $0.40 per cell
I would be more willing to bet it's not the cells if they were from one of the top 4/5. Considering they're Boston Power cells I'm considerably less confident in the cells, if only from a volume production perspective.
