With the current difficulty and the recent price spike of useable gpus, it there any profitability in building a new miner using all new parts? According to the profitibility calculators there is money to be made but how do they compare to real world use? At current market value for ETH the roi would be around a year if buying everything new. Opinions?

Give or take, calculators are like asking a 5 year old for advice.... they are based on guess work and luck.

Yep, the currency fluctuates way too much for the calculators to keep up. Plus each card is different. Even .01MH/s difference adds up over time. That's something the calcs can't account for.

Personally, I'm starting out with cheaper cards to build slowly and learn more. Then I'll upgrade the cards later on. I won't make as much, but I also won't spend as much in electricity (as I'm not set up yet to be fully off-grid with the rig).

Im trying to decide if its worth the $3k to put one together. Im sure in the long run it would be a wise move but with me building this new house there isnt a lot of extra money laying around. Decisions decisions.

How many GPUs are you looking for? You can build a rig of 4x RX580s and mine quite a bit of coin for under $2k - I'd estimate the way I'm doing it would be $1500 max.

Heck you could use old cards gathered from friends and family and learn and grow your rig with the money you make.. it's all about starting somewhere- once you get the bug you'll find the money lol .. hahah

I thought about that but I dont know anyone that has a decent gpu besides me. Lol . I would still have to buy new ones. Ill keep looking around and see where I end up. I did find this forum by accident and a month later I was buying Cells by he ton from a recycler.

Hahahha, nice :) at least you stumbled into something productive and wholesome, unlike those xxx sites :p

Not much, but I have an HD7770, HD8570, and a R7 360 currently running NiceHash. Today, I finally make the .001 BTC after about 3 weeks of mining (it did take 5 weeks, but NH was down for a couple weeks).
I know it's not all that much, as it's only about $30 USD. But, it's a start. I'll be buying the Radeon RX 560 4GB in a week or two and that'll increase my mining by 10X. So I should be able to get about $300 in a month, even if I get that in 2 months, I'll be happy. I'll still run these cards along with it as every little bit helps. Then the following month, I'll get another card, and that'll probably be the Radeon RX 470 or 570, but still the 4GB version. Then after a few months on those, I'll get something better/faster/strong.

I could probably get everything setup with 2 cards to start, then just buy 1 or 2 new cards per month so it doesnt hit me all at once. There are so many different RX580 cards to choose from and they seem to be about the best bang for the buck right now. I just need to figure out which ones are the easiest to mod and squeeze the most out of.

If I had to give advice - based on my ' last two weeks of experience' Mind you that'd exceed 50 GPU's go for Budget RX570 4gb and get as many as you can all the same. Competition for those cards is much less so BANG for Buck is right up there just did a 6 card rig http://secondlifestorage.com/t-ASUS-Expedition-RX-570-4GB-with-Elpida-memory and got stable +29mh from them for past two days. Now tinkering with duel mining but watts went from 870 to 1001 watts & mining speed dropped a bit so either needs some more tinkering or running away from duel mining

Arent the 4g cards about to be obsolete?

that's the 3GB cards. the 4GB still have a yr or so left in them

Get them mine with them for 6 months they'll pay for the next lot of upgrades - one thing I've learned MINE as much as possible as fast as possible! then hold - you'll make money!

Where are you finding good deals on 4g cards? Everywhere I look 4g and 8g are only about $100 difference.

eBay:
Radeon 4GB 560 - $130+ USD | ~ 11MH/s
Radeon 4GB 570 - $290+ USD | ~ 28MH/s
Radeon 4GB 580 - $390+ USD | ~ 32MH/s
The hashes were a quick look at the mining Ethereum on WhatToMine and MiningSpeed. The numbers are just close approximations of a quick search.

Yes, the are about $100 differece between each jump. So it depends on what your wallet if you can afford each one. I'd rather go with the 580, but I can afford that one right now, so I'll have to settle for the 560 to start off with.

Ive put together a parts list with good scale ability for future expansion. Its not the cheapest route to take but with the ability to expand it seems like the way to go. Im not really doing it for a hobby but more of a long term strategy, (aka gamble), that crypto currency is here to stay. Maybe Im wrong in my thinking but thats why Im here seeking advice. This is the board and cards im considering. ASRock H110 pro that will take 13gpus and 6 RX580 8g cards to start and add more as I get more comfortable with mining .
