I'm guessing you are stating this because the LED in the diagram is backwards(?) and therefore wouldn't work unless the flow of power was in reverse. However, the diagram does not show Pos or Neg, so it doesn't matter. The resistor can be on either the cathode or the anode side of the diode and work just the same.


If you wanted true detection regardless of flow of current, two diodes could be connected in parallel but in opposite directions. This would allow the LED to be visible under discharge and charge.
As wim stated, this application is already in place in car fuse boxes (that is, if you buy those particular fuses. they are a bit pricey, imho). So it does work

It is true. It would be unlikely to work. It wouldn't work if a cell went short circuit. It wouldn't work if a cell went open circuit.

Even if a fuse blew, the LED wouldn't light until the cells in the rest of the pack had a voltage difference great enough for the LED to glow. This could not happen.

yeah, I didn't think about the voltage difference with the rest of the pack. The other option of it working if there was a high enough draw on the pack to force current to leak past the led. But, that'd have to be a LOT of current draw.

The current would probably have to be so high it would blow all the other fuses  Tongue

I have been thinking about a way to do this myself, but nothing springs to mind. If a fuse does blow, it is just going to require visual inspection. The only other circuits that would do this would be way to complex to implement on a per cell basis.
