I had a bunch of nuts from a supplier which had been threaded at an angle so the nut did not sit flat to the surface, looks like something like this as the hot spot is one side of the nut. Also looks like the lug is on an insulator or high resistance and the washer / nut is then carrying the current back to the bar via the bolt... ??? Otherwise (appart from photoshop) there is no way the nut would get that hot above the lug without the lug glowing ?

That's what happens when you use SS fixings.

So what's the story there??? it can't be just the stainless bolts, because as long as the lugs and the busbar is copper it's fine. Loose bolts?

It's a dead short somewhere. The connection above the bolt you can see it's been burned severely.

This photo has been around before. If I'm not mistaken, the battery bank that this was on is Lead Acid.

Contaminated contact faces between the crimp and bar, so the fixing is taking the current - SS isn't a great conductor.

There's no dead short, just a high current load. The insulation is damaged due to heat being conducted from the area of poor connectivity through the crimp and wire conductors.
