What to do with excess energy?
#21
Heated seat : a lot better to use an aluminium block with cartridge heaters and then sit directly on the alloy. Contact heating works a lot better than air..

Using small cartridge heating elements is on the projects list, although there are not many of them rated for 48V..

If you can't quantify how much they cost, it's a deal, I'll buy 5 of them for 3 lumps of rocking horse ......

yeah, I find it hard to source 48V stuff too ... but its getting better, slowly ... used to be 12V only, and 24V hard to find ... now lots of 24V stuff, and some 36V ... go the 48V nominal I say!

(nice pic, btw)   ; )

all systems nominal... rock on.

I heat water with excess PV power and you can't believe how much power is wasted throughout the day.I'm heating water with excess by 8am. I'm off grid for 5 months in the summer and used to have a propane heater. Totally got rid of that as it never got turned on for several years. I built my own control for under $20 using an off the shelf board found on ebay. It monitors PV voltage that goes to your regular charge controller. As you know, PV voltage climbs above the power point voltage when load drops. That is when I start diverting power, 5W to 500W or more. All this is very seamless. All this is very seamless and I can't believe more people aren't doing this. I have two hot water tanks. Primary is a very small 6 gallon with fast response. the second in series is 10 gallon. System also powers my dishwasher heating element and I have heated dry. I divert about 2,500WH a day from a 60V array. PV array is sized to just run minimal home system on rainy day. Average day I can turn on the dishwasher at 10am. My design also allows you to use existing heater thermostat on DC without arcing!

Just wanted to say thanks RikH for the diversion.... wasted an hour watching this guy he's funny...  I needed the laugh.

That's intereting. Can you tell us more technical details about this?
