Wow I haven't been here in like forever. Last time I was here this place was called diypowerwalls.com.

Anyway let's get to the point of the thread.

I have been battery pack building quite some time now, but mostly packs for my ebike. Finding low discharge 18650 cells is not really that difficult these days. I have contacts with a few junkyards around my area that usually get in old medical batteries with plenty of 18650 cells in them.

Unlike most of the guys on the forum, I'm not building a powerwall or anything. I am trying to build a second ebike battery. I currently have one, but it is made of old laptop cells, and it get's really hot under load because it is a 52v 20AH battery and I pull 35 amps from it at all times.

Point being I need high discharge cells and NOT the run-of-the-mill 18650 cells from laptops and such. I am looking for cells like The Samsung 13Q, LG HA1, Samsung 22P, Sanyo UR18650NSX or any other 18650 cell that can handle at least 10 amps continuous according to their datasheet.

Finding low discharge 18650 cells has gotten easy these days, but finding HIGH discharge 18650 cells (like the kind found in power tools and hoverboards) has proven to be really hard. Does anyone have good places to go to for high discharge 18650 cells? The only cells I can find around me are low discharge.

I am thinking about going to a few home improvement stores like home depot or lowes and asking if they have any power tool batteries I can have, but I haven't actually asked anyone anything yet.

Also I live in michigan, not sure if that helps but I thought I would add that.

Also one more thing to add:

If you live in the lower 48 states in the US, maybe we can work out a deal. I have access to plenty of Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Sanyo cells pulled from old laptop and medical batteries with capacities above 2000mah. Since I am looking for high drain cells, I am okay with using low capacity cells like the Samsung 13Q (which is only 1300mah). Since I know this is below the threshold for usage in powerwallls, a ton of people toss them. I will be more than happy to trade tested 18650 cells pulled from laptops with capacities above 2000mah for high drain but very low capacity cells pulled from drill batteries. For example, I would probably be happy to trade a 2000mah laptop cell for a single 1000mah high drain cell or two 2000mah laptop cells for a single 2000mah high drain cell.

One source for high drain cells are cordless power tool battery packs. You could check the local hardware stores and see if they'll let you grab some packs from their recycling bin. I believe Wally world also has a battery recycling bin, too.

Put a post in the marketplace. A lot of users do not have any use for low capacity high drain cells. So you might have some luck. Many power tool batteries are often below the 2000mah cutoff.

That said, it is hard to get good secondhand power tool batteries. Often they cannot deliver their original rated current, due to the abuse they get. Power tools are often exposed to high temperatures, being dropped, and a high cycle count.

I have round about 3000 high drain sony us18650v with tested 1500mAh and would be happy to exchange them with high capacity cells... unfortunately i do live in austria...

Anyone around here to do the swap?

Best
Karl

ebike batteries are a great source. I just harvested 120 NCR18650PD / F cells.
Hoverbaord packs are also great, they are mainly samsung 22p or the LG equivalent. 22p cells from hoverboard packs is what nearly my entire powerwall is built from.

I was collecting these batteries so I could fix some dead/broken drill batteries. Home Depot has recycle bins for this stuff. I walked in and asked if I could poke through the bin and they had no problem. They even checked in the back area for me to see if they had more.

I bought a bunch of them that came from those 10s hoverboard packs... LG and Samsung

Power tools also come to mind for a good source.
