li ion gasses

Hello to all,

When i am harvesting cells from ebike battery's, i smell that sweet smell of li ion.
I know those cells are no good anymore, ----> bucket of salt water.

But what is the health hazard with those li ion gasses/fumes?

First i take the battery apart, then i take a ankle grinder to thin out the nickel strip, i dont touch the cell it self.
So i can take the nickel strip of more easy, without damaging the cells

If i dont use an angle grinder i lose 50-60% of my cells, now a 5-10%
But there must be other ways than to use a ankle grinder?

If i grind into the cell outer walls, some paint/solder? to prevent rust/oxidising?
When i finish grinding in the shed i take them inside the house for futher proses.

So how harmfull are those gasses when a cell vents/ or a hole was made when i take of the strip?

First of all if a cell vented you need to bin it.
The fumes are for sure not healthy but not sure how dangerous they are.

Angle grinde? I just rip the parts out and the ones i cant i cut of.
Do not what ever you do grind on the cell. You weaken the cell and potentially cause the internal protection to malfunction.

What kind of odor does the gas smell?

If it's a sugary smell, then you've got some solvents in the air, and I would check any cell that has a leak/hole, and throw it away.

When i rip the strips of, some battery's does not smell, aldo they have a hole in it, i throw them away, anyway

The ankle grinder i use mostly on ebike packs, it started with those really annoying "gazelle" they think they are so smart.
First some thick glu, then epoxi, then epoxi with some liquid rubber junk....whats next.
Welcome in my shed, i got surtain tools(30 year wood worker), gazelle 0 igora 1, lol

But seriously, with the grinder i thin out the nickel strip by the spotwelds, to weaken them, so i have a higher % of salvation.
And yes some times i hit the cell it self, sometimes bad, deep cut, sometimes a scratch.
If i rip them of, without weakening them first i can throw 50% away, wast of time and work.

I think also i gain more time with the grinder and makes it easier, for me.
The cells with a scratch i keep, maybe i have to solder them right away? or some paint?
The deep cut ones, are for the bucket with salt

total loss is not even 5%

If there are other methods, i am more then happy to try them.
I was also thinking of a cutter of some sort in my "fixed standing drill machine" (sorry dont know the english word for this machine)

Yesterday I opened a sealed pack, did not know what to expect.
When there was a opening there were a lot of gasses coming out.
So much, i went outside with the pack, i was not feeling well for a moment.

Glad i work in the shed, next time, i will leave those things alone.
There are some teabag shaped battery's in it, i believe the are called pouce cells?
They are really big cells: 15cm tall, 7,5 cm width and 2,5 thick.
4 of them, one was for sure leaking, i am very sure it was NOT my mistake

Those soft cells, i got some more, also from laptops.
Is anybody interested in them? if yes i will save it up, and i want three things.
