Here is a basic BMS that allows monitoring control and protection of Tesla Model S battery modules connected in parallel. You need to get at the balancing taps directly but there are several boards that do that already. I like the fact that it can do parallel strings without branching interconnects or safety devices. One device can do up to four Model S modules in parallel.

It's a little light in the I/O and control department and there is some basic GUI and display options available but it is CANBUS so..

I am very much looking forward to the Centralized design after struggling with an unnamed distributed BMS I've been using for about a year now. I've learned that less is more and reliability and repeatability is key to my piece of mind.

Have a look here:https://www.thunderstruck-ev.com/bms/

I would be interested in your experience with this setup if you are planning on running some Tesla packs with it.

I still have ~6k 18650 cells to put together, but I have been eyeballing Tesla packs just for the plug and play aspect compared to soldering/welding 1400 cells together.

I have a suspension that the other BMS system you are referring to might be the company that just released a similar product that will work with Tesla Packs. Seems like they are currently ~$50 different in price so that wouldn't be the deciding factor in my book.

I am doing this installation this week. It will be two Tesla Model S modules in parallel. I got my modules from HSC Motors last year. At that time they were either the module with Tesla's BMB or with a 7 pin JST installled. Now they sell all their modukes with a proper breakout board for cell taps and thermistors. They sent me a couple boards this week to fit to my two modules.

I found this BMS by chance while wondering why a certain EV car conversion place sold everything under the Sun for conversions except a BMS. I found out they use the one above but only Thunderstruck can sell it retail as they manufacture it. I think I'm in pretty good hands now but we will see. Wish I knew about it before all the wasted time converting my modules to two wire taps but so goes the process.

I am, most often, too far away from my system to check daily and respond when it decides to random freeze while still allowing charge and discharge enable. It. Must. Go.

Good luck with your build!
