Another DIY Powerwall in Germany (15 kWh)

Always a good day when you get more cells :D
I would be interested in the capacity those Samsung ICR18650-22FM have.
They should be very similar to the ICR18650-22PM That 95% of my build will be made of, and I might have access to some of those 22FM cells, curious if I can mix them.
Do you note down from what e-bike batteries you get what type of and brand of cells?

This will probably be one of the last packs which I'm going to disassemble as it's totally glued together :(
But sure, I will report once I get there :)

Currently I have already measured 90 cells and very happy: ~ 40 Samsung 29E with still 2900 - 3000 mAh, 20 Panasonic CGR18650CF with ~ 2000 mAh and 20 Panasonic NCR18650 with ~ 2900 mAh and 10 Panasonic CGR18650CG with ~ 2300 mAh. Average is currently 2615 mAh :D

Only 6 bad cells so far...

You could see if there's anything that would dissolve the glue.

Most of the time the packs are glued together with ordinary hot glue which perfectly melts together with the heat shrink wrapping. In rare cases, you can just peel it of (probably if the glue was not hot enough to melt the heat shring wrapping) but usually the wrapping also disintegrates. I think trying to dissolve the glue will also dissolve the wrapping.
So I think destroying the wrapping + rewrapping is the best method :)

Hi!

Although a real pain to disassemble, the whole pack seems fine and the Samsung ICR18650-22FM still have ~2200 mAh left.

Pretty good results. The max the OPUS would show on a new cell like that is about 2400mAh. So you are looking at about 2000mAh real capacity or cells with 95% of the original capacity from 1A discharge test.
2240is essentially the average ofwhat I was getting on the OPUS for all of my 1560 cells of typeICR18650-22PM.
So yeah thats a pretty good pack you had there.

I wouldnt say its 20% below the real capacity. It depends on so many factors. I have seen it very very close on some cells and way off on others compare to for instance my iCharger. It all depends on what you compare to and what datasheet you go after. Its different ways of testing :)

Neat interface :) Though, it's not in english, i can get the jist of what's what :p

Hi!

Next cell delivery. Somewhere around 600. Mostly Samsung 22P, 22F and Sony US18650V

Crazy :D

That bike shop sure has lots of broken batteries coming in. Do you buy them from the shop?

Hi!

And again more cells, ~ 500 :D. Luckily, mostly loose cells this time already removed from their packs. Saves me lots of time :)

In the meantime I'm also wiring up some more cell holders.

If the cells keep coming at this rate, I expect to finish my upgrade in about 4-5 weeks. Currently I have 980 good cells, with this portion probably around 1400.

The upgrade will just be stacked ontop the current setup.
...So getting close to my 3920 cell powerwall :D

best regards,
Alex

...1420 good ones so far and another 600 just arrived today :D

should be enough for my upgrade!

take your time, no need for a hurry... cell counter doesn't need any updates :D

Don't worry, I need about 2 more weeks to measure the remaining cells and probably another 1-2 weeks to solder everything together. So still about 1 month left before I update the cell counter to 3920 cells ;)

Madness!
admit it the bike shop is telling people their packs are broken and is selling them new ones ;;)n order to give them to you :D

Hi!

A short update: Finished measuring all cells. Ended up with 1975 good ones, so enough for my upgrade to 3920 cells :)
Cells are now sorted in their holders.

now comes the soldering part, which is probably the hardest work :dodgy:

LOL with that many colors, you should see if you can spell out "18650ED!" :p Or "POWERWALL" Or "18650" on one line, and "POWERWALL" and the second line. Then hang them so they are easily visible ;)
